News from LCHS
As a school we prioritize safety. We regularly conduct lock down drills, fire drills, and evacuation drills. We do this so, in the incredibly unlikely event of a real emergency, our staff and students know how to react in ways that will keep them safe. In light of the recent tragic events in Florida, we wanted to let you know that we will continue this practice. We don’t want parents or students to be needlessly alarmed, but will go forth with an unannounced lockdown drill sometime in the next two weeks. We will clearly indicate that it is a drill, but want our students to continue to have this important practice and reflection on safety.
We have a high school student, Cormac O’Harrow, coming from DC to intern this summer with the Herald Democrat. His father is a reporter for the Washington Post and he is excited to live here this summer and work in Leadville. Please reach out directly to Robert at Robert.OHarrow@washpost.com if your family has a room he could rent during the summer.
Coffee with the principal—Next week on March 7th, we would love to invite parents to come have coffee with Mr. Cairns, 8:00 am – 9:00 am, LCHS cafeteria. We will have some coffee and Mr. Cairns will make a few comments on some of the instructional focuses at the HS. Parents will then be invited to walk classrooms for about 20 minutes and then debrief what they saw. Our goal is to build some community amongst parents as well as deepen parent understanding about our instructional approaches in the HS. The March 7th Coffee with the principal will be in English, we will do it again in Spanish on March 14th.
Mike Vagher will host the Spring sports preseason parents/athletes/coaches meeting on Monday, March 5th in the LCHS cafeteria at 6pm.
Is your student looking for summer outdoor job, internship, or credit-bearing volunteer opportunity? Please join Get Outdoors Leadville! and partners on March 6th in the LCHS cafeteria for a Family Information Night to learn about opportunities and help your student get enrolled. Parental involvement is required in the application process (either on the Family Information Night or through individual meetings) – so this is a great opportunity to take care of it! Stop by on the hour at 4pm, 5pm, or 6pm. We will provide snacks! Please contact Becca – bkatz@lakecountyschools.net / 719-293-5169 with questions. *Becca speaks Spanish.
