Kindergarteners Use Trout to Learn Sorting
September 26th, our Kindergarten classes visited the Leadville National Fish Hatchery as part of their unit studying the Greenback Cutthroat Trout. Their visit was focused on the Colorado state science standard “Objects can be sorted by physical properties, which can be observed and measured.” Kindergarten teachers and Fish Hatchery staff used the visit to observe different trout species and talk about their properties. Students learned and observed that some trout species, for instance, have more spots than others. They also talked about where trout live at the hatchery (inside or out) based on their age and size. The Fish Hatchery staff commented on what good questions our Kindergarteners were asking. This morning during Friday Late Start Enrichment, several Kindergarteners were choosing to draw trout and talk about the visit. How cool!
