Board Notes for October
Michaela Main was elected as the board student representative through student senate; the board approved.
The board approved Resolution 20-06: support of Colorado Climate Change Education Network (C3EN). C3EN is supported by the high school staff, and LCHS will be the anchor school for the program.
Superintendent update: talked to CDE about upgrading school ratings, but application will be pulled as there is no supporting data. West Park wants to see 80% performance- will be rated “improvement” per school leadership decision. Colorado superintendents are asking the commissioner of education for consistency in accountability standards. Wendy presenting to CASB about reform work December 6.
Student reports: student leadership working in student involvement with Mr. Spencer’s and Mrs. Aldaz. Started doing coffee with Cairns Tuesday mornings to discuss issues.
Board reviewed policies SP-1 to SP-5 with no major changes. Administration policy regarding public participation at board meetings moved to board governance policy.
The board reviewed status of superintendent search process.
Board approved ahead Start baseline grant for the next five-year cycle for The Center.
Counseling department updated the board on the work they’re doing. Main focuses are making sure students are on track, promote college and career readiness, and community and family partnerships. The counseling department measures their work by student outcomes.
High school/CMC partnership update: there are many class offerings for students, including many offered at the high school. There is a teacher cadet program at the high school, and if students complete the program with a grade of B or better, they are guaranteed admission into the CU system schools.
There was a public participation discussion regarding club/crew time expectations. The concern of equality/equity was voiced for all students, including those that are not comfortable with what is being taught in the classroom. A further discussion is happening outside of the boardroom with school administration.
The board worked on superintendent search qualifications, essay questions, and salary that will be offered.
