BOE Announces Superintendent Finalists
The Lake County School District Board of Education has narrowed the field to three candidates in its search for a new school superintendent. The search process was precipitated last year, when Superintendent Wendy Wyman announced she would be stepping down at the conclusion of the current school year. A first round of interviews did not yield a decision, and the search was reopened on March 2.
The three finalists are Bethany Massey, Michael Vagher, and Julissa Vega. The candidates will participate in a virtual town hall on Wednesday, April 1 from 5:30 to 7:30. Community members can watch the Zoom Meeting. The Town Hall will be available in English and Spanish. Click here for details on the on Zoom Meeting.
Massey currently serves as principal and director of assessment in the South Routt School District. Before that, she was Director of Assessment and Technology in the Summit County School District. She has also been a teacher and a coach. She has a PhD in Instructional Technology from Georgia State University where she focused on use of technology in education among Mexican-American youth. She is an outdoor enthusiast and has spent a lot of time in Leadville climbing 14ers, participating in Boom Days, watching ski joring and eating at Quincy’s.
Vagher has been a part of the Lake County community for 12 years, serving as a teacher and a coach, then as assistant principal and athletic director. He is currently the director of safety and security. He is known throughout the Lake County Community for his strong interpersonal skills and his work ethic. He has a Masters in Education Leadership from Adams State University.
Vega is currently a K-12 science instructional coordinator and interim principal in the Harrison School District in Colorado Springs. Vega is a native of Puerto Rico and a specialist in place-based education like Expeditionary Learning. She is also a park ranger and has integrated her expertise into educational experiences for children. She completed all the course work for a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico.
The Lake County Board of Education is eager for the community to participate in Wednesday’s virtual town hall and to provide feedback. Feedback forms will be available 4:00 pm on Wednesday.
