Details –

Salary Grade: Daily

                          Year 1: $132/day uncertified; $144/day with Colorado Teacher’s Certificate

                          Years 2-5: $140/day uncertified; $152/day with Colorado Teacher’s Certificate

                          Years 6-10: $148/day uncertified; $160/day with Colorado Teacher’s Certificate

                          Long Term Rate: $160/day

Long term is defined as 11 or more days of consecutive days in same assignment. Rate would go in to effect on the 11^th day.

Work Year:  Variable August through June, as needed; 8 hour full day, 6-hour ¾ day, or 4 hour ½ day

Reports To:  Building principal/ HR Manager/Substitute Coordinator

Purpose of position: To replace the regularly appointed teacher in his/her absence. To provide as closely as possible the same successful instructional and learning environment that would exist if the regularly appointed teacher were in attendance. The substitute teacher is responsible for carrying out the lesson plans of the regularly appointed teacher for whom he/she is substituting.

Essential functions daily:

• Teaches lesson plan as outlined by the absent teacher. Performs all extra duties for the absent teacher as required by the building principal.  Actively instructs monitors and engages with students in appropriate ways to enhance learning.
• Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
• Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned.
• Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students. Promotes public relations for the school’s programs and activities. 
• Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation, pertaining to teacher and students.  Keep all school-based information confidential.
• Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
• Remains at school during the entire school day unless excused by the principal or the designated representative. (Allowed to leave campus on 30-minute, duty free lunch after signing out in front office.)
• Implements all rules and regulations, policies and administrative guidelines as adopted by the Board of Education.
• Maintains a professional appearance as an example for students. Maintains regular attendance and punctuality. Adheres to the professional code of conduct adopted by the Lake County School District Board. Performs other duties consistent with the position as may be requested by the Principal, office secretary or Superintendent.
• Use technology only for instructional purposes.  (Personal cell phones and computers should only be used during duty-free lunch period.)
• Responds to requests by substitute coordinator in a timely manner.

Periodic Duties (long-term substitute duties)

• Attends staff meetings, serves on staff committees, and performs duties as assigned by the principal, School Board Policies, or Superintendent
• Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
• Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
• Makes provisions to be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
• Becomes acquainted with parents; reports any unusual occurrence or event to the principal or the designated representative immediately.

Ongoing:  Perform other duties as assigned; assist with emergency situations to keep all students safe and calm, in compliance with Building Emergency Response Team instruction.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma or equivalent.

Familiarity with Lake County School District Policies and procedures, mandated child abuse reporting, and general substitute provisions as outlined in annual District Trainings.  

Familiarity with the community and families helps in fostering productive relationships beneficial.

EXPERIENCE: None required

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT:

The ability to use computers and technology helpful (TV, CD player, internet, projector, etc.).

Important workplace competencies include:  growth mindset, cultural competency, customer focus, time management, perseverance, positive peer relationships, and effective communication.    

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:  Active Colorado Substitute or Certified Teacher Credential; pass fingerprinting/background check.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Any disciplinary decisions, parent contacts, or behaviors of concern need to be presented to the principal or their designee.  Decision making requires collaboration with Principal or school staff.  Errors in decision making could lead to safety or hazards for students and staff.  Following all safety protocols is essential, especially never physically disciplining or verbally abusing a child. Always using appropriate physical contact is essential.  Errors in judgement could result in a law enforcement investigation, or discipline procedures

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move around and talk in an instructional tone.  Supervision of students includes scanning areas, assessing situations, and proximity to issues.  The employee occasionally is required to use hands, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, and bodily fluids from working with children.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate clearly, think quickly, adjust lessons and plan within the instructional day.
