Thanks again for an awesome week! 2nd grade students had their Cornerstone day this week on Thursday.\u00a0 Students had a great time and got to engage in many team building activities that brought their crews together.\u00a0 Check out the photos below that highlight some of their day.

Parent Volunteers Needed:<\/strong>If you would like to volunteer to be a pod parent from 7:45-8:10 in the morning, please reach out to me at kpongrekun@lakecountyschools.net<\/a>.\u00a0 You would help students get their belongings put away for the day and take any messages that parents want to share with the teacher that day.\u00a0 This would be a continual commitment at least one day a week.\u00a0 Thanks so much for helping out at the school.\u00a0\u00a0

Each week this year in family communication, we will be highlighting a staff member in the building.\u00a0 If you want, please feel free to send emails, handwritten notes, or letters of encouragement to that staff member.\u00a0\u00a0




Mrs. Bertram- Mrs. Bertram was a classroom teacher for 17 years and is now in her 9th year as a Special Education teacher. She grew up in Montana and Colorado. Stephanie\u2019s family has owned five basset hounds and she has owned four VW Beetles, herself. In her free time she enjoys reading, spending time with dogs, and exercise. Stephanie is inspired day in and day out by helping kids love learning and overcoming the odds. Her dream vacation would be to fly first class to Australia and New Zealand

K-2 Specifics<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>
NWEA:<\/strong>Students in 1st grade will test NEWA for math this week.  This will help us get a baseline for where students are at in their foundational math skills. Students are tested three times a year in order to see their growth and achievement in math. Kindergarten students will start taking this in the middle of the year.  
Drop off and Pick Up:<\/strong>Breakfast is served daily from 7:30-8:00.  If you would like your child to eat breakfast, please drop them off by at least 7:45 daily to give them time to eat. 

Classes start at 8:00.  If your child arrives after 8:00, they will need to stop in the front office to get a tardy slip.  
Pick up starts each day at 3:20-3:30.  Thanks for picking up on time each day.  If you need to change your child\u2019s after school instructions, please call the front office before 2:30.  If you call after 2:30, we can not guarantee that your change of plans can happen.  
Bus Routes: <\/strong>Bus routes for the 2023-2024 school year have been updated and posted to the school district website. Please click here<\/a> if you have any questions  regarding times for bus stop location or times. 
HOWLs: <\/strong>LCES has begun using HOWLs dollars to award good behavior. These dollars are awarded for showing any of our Habits of Work and Learning (HOWLs): Collaboration, Respect, Responsibility, Craftsmanship, Compassion, Perseverance, Curiosity, and Creativity. We\u2019ve started the school store and it will visit Crews in the morning so that students can purchase items using their HOWLs dollars. Encourage your students to show outstanding HOWLs behavior each and every day. 
Reflection Zone: <\/strong>We have begun implementing a reflection zone during lunch recess. Reflection zones can be assigned to any student by any teacher. Students can be assigned a reflection zone if they engage in what we call habitual tier one behavior which can include: off task, sleeping during instruction, unkind words, unsafe choice, inappropriate language, minor physical contact, defiance\/refusal, disrupting the classroom environment. Habitual means the same behavior occurred three times in a day even with teacher redirection and strategies. Students will complete a reflection form the day they go to the reflection zone. Teachers will contact parents\/guardians the same day that your student was assigned a reflection zone. The student will bring home their reflection form for parents to review and talk with your student about their behavior. Please sign the form and return the next day with your student. <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Preschool Specifics<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>
Curriculum:<\/strong>This week we will be learning the five senses; sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch as part of the domain \u201cAll About Me\u201d. Children will also be learning the nursery rhyme, \u201cDo Your Ears Hang Low?\u201d. For the second step, children will be learning to focus their attention. Here is the link for this lesson.<\/a>
Head Start Families<\/strong>Our first home visit for the year is scheduled on Friday, September 8, 2023 from 1-4pm, these visits are required for head start families only. Your child\u2019s teacher will be reaching out to you in the next couple of weeks to schedule these visits. Policy council ballots will be in your child\u2019s folder next week. Please take a moment to vote for policy council members. Thank you!
Bus Evacuation Drill:<\/strong>We will have our First Bus Evacuation Drill on Tuesday August 29th, 2023, when students arrive at school.
Reminders:<\/strong>Remember to have your student to school at 9am. Breakfast is served from 9:00-9:20.
Be sure to put your student\u2019s yellow folder in their backpack to return on Monday so that we can fill them back up with important information.   Thanks for helping with this.
If you still have orientation paperwork such as Parent Agreement, Health forms, Goal Settings,  Child and Adult Food Care Program form during orientation, please place them in your child\u2019s yellow folder under the Return to School section or drop it off at the front office.

Project Dream Information<\/td><\/tr>
Smart Bellies Fall 2023\/24 Sign-Up Now Open<\/strong> Smart Bellies is a weekend food program that delivers nutritious foods to kids in Lake County in collaboration with Project Dream. If you have a child in the Lake County school district and would like to receive a weekly delivery, please complete the sign-up form today. You can sign up using the following link: https:\/\/www.smartbellies.org\/lake<\/a>. This meal delivery program is open to any student in the Lake County School District! Fall deliveries will start on Thursday, August 31st.<\/strong>

If you are currently enrolled in Smart Bellies, please know the last day of summer deliveries will be August 24th. If you would like to continue to receive Smart Bellies, please be sure to complete the 2023\/24 sign-up form!<\/strong>
Project Dream!<\/strong>
All Project Dream programs start August 28th<\/sup>! The week of August 21st<\/sup> all K-6 students that registered for programs will receive a confirmation letter that must be returned to the school\u2019s Site Supervisor.
