News From LCHS 3/9/23
Good morning LCHS Families,
We really enjoyed seeing and collaborating with you all this week. We had a great turnout for conferences and had many valuable conversations about our student’s future. We are really getting close to the end of the year. Next week is the end of the 3rd quarter, which means we only have 12 weeks of school left when we return from Spring Break! A friendly reminder, our clocks spring forward this Sunday, March 12th. This means at 2:00 am it will become 3:00 am.
Thank you,
Brian Nelson

LCHS Students Attend Play and Historic Sites in Denver
by Luke Finken
On Friday, January 27th, a group of 38 Lake County High School students attended Aaron Sorkin’s play, “Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird,” at the Buell Theater. This play was the culminating event for most Leadville students as this Pulitzer Prize winning novel was mandatory reading at LCHS for the past 8 or so years.
Students first arrived in Denver to visit the new mural on CU Denver’s campus featuring LCHS graduate, Dr. William Mundo. This recent mural addition to CU Denver was a touching way to start the day, as Dr. Mundo’s Leadville upbringing is well known to some current LCHS students and staff.
After a brief lunch, the students traveled to The Molly Brown House.
The Brown House warmly greeted the students and staff from Lake County School District. The entrance fee for the group was waived as the Brown House and Leadville are cultivating connections through Leadville’s work with their twinned city, Allihies, Ireland.
Throughout the tour, students could be heard giving answers to questions related to the history of Leadville and the Browns. “Hey, there’s the Ice Palace!” and “Hey, there’s my house on this map!” were frequently discussed as the tour wound its way up the ornate bannisters of this historic home in Capitol Hill. Andrea Malcolm, The Molly Brown House’s Museum Director, greeted the group and presented them with a poster from a prior Leadville exhibit. The poster is now located at LCHS. As the group left the Brown House, one of the docents called, “Thank YOU! Without Leadville, none of this would exist.”
Students then visited the Colorado State Capitol. This visit marked the first visit to this focal point of Colorado Government for most students. Students enjoyed their time exploring the vastness of the great building. Some students even popped into open offices to inquire about the business of the Government.
“I really enjoyed going to see the State Capitol. I had never seen a building so big and so beautiful,” said freshman Dulce Maria.
That evening, the group attended “To Kill a Mockingbird” at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. The show was a powerful moment for the students. Most agreed that the acting and the story were very moving.
Junior Ivan Liewer, commented, “I thought the play was very interesting. Reading the book, a lot of the same parts were similar. If you paid attention to the book, a lot was not there. The ways the actors connected to the audience was pretty cool. They tried to answer questions people had. The tone of the actors…aw, man! It was so surreal. My favorite part was toward the end, when all the characters connected around Jem’s broken arm. The whole scene was memorable.”
The lead role of Atticus Finch was played by Richard Thomas (“John-Boy Walton”). The role of Mrs. Henry Dubose was played by Mary Badham, the very actor who portrayed Scout Finch in the 1962 movie version of “Mockingbird” which starred Gregory Peck as Atticus.
The entire trip was paid for by LCSD’s After School Programming and Project Dream. Taylor Trelka, Director of this branch of LCSD programming remarked, “Project Dream Out of School Time programs were eager to sponsor the student trip to see ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ at the Denver Center for Performing Arts. During after school tutoring and Friday credit recovery, Project Dream staff support students in passing classes and recovering credits from classes. One of the main subjects we support students with is ELA. On Friday, we saw students’ excitement spark from being able to see a play based on a book they had read for English class. Experiences like these grow student engagement in school and provide an unforgettable experience.”

A Message from Lake County Commissioner
Due to the fact that the end of February marks the end of SNAP Max Allotment for all SNAP households, Lake County is providing ARPA funds as financial assistance to all SNAP households in Lake County.
As promised, we have updated details on the plan for distribution of these resources.
The following days are designated for SNAP head of households to come to the Lake County Department of Human Services (annex building) offices to receive this financial assistance:
- Wednesday, March 1 from 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM
- Friday, March 10 from 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM
In this plan, Lake County SNAP households will receive one-time assistance.
This financial assistance is meant to serve as partial compensation for three months of SNAP Max Allotment for March, April and May.
The assistance amounts are based on the size of the SNAP household.
The purpose of this assistance is to ease the financial burden created by loss of SNAP Max Allotment payments at the end of February.
Every attempt will be made to get this assistance to all SNAP households in Lake County, beginning with the distribution days at the Courthouse Annex (the DHS Offices) on March 1 and March 10.
Follow up with SNAP households who do not claim their assistance on those days will continue, including specific outreach to individuals who are homebound.
All SNAP household members can call the Lake County Department of Human Services if they have questions, by dialing 719-486-2088.
Please note that Lake County Human Services is experiencing a significant increase in call volume. If callers are prompted to leave a voicemail, please do so and include what program they are asking about.
More information will be available in the coming weeks on the County Website, flyers posted around the community, within the Herald Democrat, and through direct mailing. All material will be in Spanish and English.
Please share this information with your clients.
If you have questions, please email Janeen McGee at Janeen.McGee@state.co.us or Tim Bergman at tbergman@co.lake.co.us
What is SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps low-income households in Colorado purchase food. It provides a monthly benefit that helps families and individuals buy the food they need for good health. SNAP is part of a federal nutrition program to help low-income households purchase food.
What is SNAP Max Allotment?
Colorado Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) households have been getting an extra amount of benefits every month because of the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020. These extra benefits are called “Emergency Allotments or Max Allotments” and most households have been getting them in addition to their regular SNAP benefits. These Emergency Allotments were authorized by Congress, but they are temporary, and will be ending at the end February 2023, because of the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023. We fully understand that this Federal policy decision to reduce SNAP benefits will hit some Lake County households particularly hard.
Thank you for your continued support to our community and SNAP households,
Sarah Mudge
