LCIS FASO 5-20-22
Hello LCIS Families!
This past week students took their NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) assessments in English Language Arts and Math. Many students made growth in both academic areas when compared to their results in the fall. We are looking forward to honoring these students at our community meeting this week on Thursday when our 6th graders host this celebration. Our habit this month is responsibility and this month’s habit winners will also be announced. We hope to see you at 8:05 in the gym on Thursday for our last community meeting!
Thank you to everyone who came to the Art Show on Thursday! It was so nice to come together again and celebrate the creative work of all of the LCSD students after our two year hiatus. Thank you to all of the volunteers, teachers and students who made our comeback year such a fabulous success! 🎨🎪
The Elitch’s Music Competition was rescheduled due to weather concerns. Students will be traveling to Denver to compete at Elitch Gardens on Wednesday, May 25th. Please have your child wear their Panther T-Shirts from this year. Students should come to school by their regular method. The bus will be leaving at 8am and returning to Leadville at about 6pm. The weather on Wednesday is supposed to be warm and sunny!
🎵🎵🎵Spring Concert Update: Due to scheduling challenges, the LCSD music department has made some changes to our upcoming concerts. We will get to experience a combined band and choir concert on Tuesday, May 24 for students in grades 3-12. LCIS students should be at the high school by 6 pm and the concert will begin at 6:30 pm. We are expecting a full house. We are really excited about this musical showcase and hope you can be there!
3rd graders are studying geometry in math. We are learning about parallel lines, right angles, and properties of different polygons. We started studying perimeter and finding the perimeter and areas of various shapes. In English/language language arts, and science, we are studying water issues around the world. Students are reading articles about demands on water, access to water, and water pollution. Students are writing lots of main idea paragraphs about these topics. They will be choosing an issue they feel strongly about and writing an essay about their water related issue. We took a field trip to the Cloud City Farm to do some activities related to the water cycle and farming. On June 3rd we will take another field trip to Twin Lakes for a day of water testing and analysis, macroinvertebrate study, and fishing. We have planned the field trip with experts from CMC. We will send more information as the date nears. GOL has helped us get lots of water science kits that we will be working with the next few weeks. Science is hands-on, interactive, and fun!
Continue to encourage your child to do their homework and read at home each night!
4th graders have continued their exploration of angle measures this week. Students have gotten to know the definition of a degree measure, dividing up a circle into 360 equal parts, recognizing that each part is “one degree,” and using protractors to measure and draw angles. 4th graders then got the opportunity to apply this knowledge to a variety of situations, such as: minutes on a clock, cardinal directions (“When facing north, if you make a 90 degree turn to the right, what is the new direction you are facing?”) and drawing a variety of angles (acute, right, and obtuse) with the assistance of their trusty protractors.
5th graders have been learning about weather in their current science unit. They are studying wind speed, air temperature, clouds, air pressure, and wind direction. Students in Ms. Butler’s class made weather instruments to measure wind speed (anemometers), air pressure (barometers) and wind direction (a wind vane). They recorded their results daily on a chart in their classroom. There might be some future meteoroligists at LCIS!
6th graders have moved on to the last math module, Data and Statistics. We are learning about dot plots, histograms, and the variability of data. In ELA, 6th grade students are working on their last performance task, researching and preparing a slide show about a Hidden Figure, a woman who has accomplished something remarkable. In Social Studies, we are continuing to study the industrial revolution in the United States in the late 1800s, early 1900s.
