LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 12-30-22
Happy New Year Panthers!
We hope that you’ve had a wonderful winter break and that your child is ready to come back to school next week. Remember that school this week runs Tuesday through Friday. We have no school on Monday.
Grades will be finalized this week and report cards will be sent home in folders on Friday along with the weekly homework packet.
Our HOWL for January is collaboration. The targets for collaboration are:
- I communicate well by actively listening and explaining my ideas clearly.
- I work with others to achieve a common goal.
Please remember to send your child to school with outdoor winter clothes! Students go outside for recess every day if the temperature is 10 degrees or warmer and the wind chill is 0 or warmer. We go outside if it’s snowing or clear. Students who are dressed for the weather enjoy themselves much more than those who are not.

Calendar Feedback Survey #3
Our last calendar survey asked for ideas from our stakeholders on ways we can improve the current school calendar. We have compiled ideas that were generated. Please provide your feedback on the ideas that have been generated. We will use the feedback from this survey to move forward into planning our future calendars. This survey will be open until January 6th at 5PM.

LCIS is participating in the SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee again this year! Mark your calendars for February 8th at 8am in the LCIS Gym as this is when our crew spelling bee winners will compete to become the school champion and have the opportunity to compete at the state level. Students will be bringing home spelling packets over the winter break, so be sure to start quizzing them! Remember that in a spelling bee a student must say the word, spell the word, then say the word. Start building that habit now!
Ms. Lynette is preparing students for a Friendship Concert that will take place on February 14th at 2:30pm in the LCIS Gym. All performances will connect to our February Habit of the Month: Compassion. Students will also perform this spring on May 31st at 6:30 at the LCHS Auditorium. We look forward to hearing our children sing and play instruments.
Is your child interested in learning how to ski or snowboard? We are so fortunate that SOS Outreach programs are offered in Leadville! This affordable programming is designed for children, grades 3 and above, who have little to no experience skiing or snowboarding. Students receive all equipment, plus lift tickets and professional instructors. Programming is offered for five days, Saturday or Sunday, through the Learn to Ride/Ski program at either Ski Cooper or Copper Mountain, depending on your child’s age and experience. If you or child wants to learn more about the opportunity to ski or snowboard this ski season, they can learn more about the programming in their morning crew when Mikayla from SOS visits! ACADEMIC UPDATE:
Third graders have completed our 4th unit, all about Ancient Rome! When students return in January we will begin unit 5: Light and Sound. This scientific and historical unit will culminate in a newspaper article about an inventor and their major inventions. We will also begin a new unit in math relating multiplication to the area of rectangles. Please continue practicing math facts with your scholars at home over the break.
Fourth graders will begin a new math module on Fractions. Students will make comparisons using like denominators and numerators, find equivalent fractions, and add and subtract fractions. Students will start a new unit in ELA called Eureka! Student Inventor. It is a 10-day ELA Quest. Quests are narrative-driven units that immerse students in close reading adventures. Through them, students read complex literary and informational texts and consistently demonstrate their ability to find evidence and use it appropriately. Over the course of the Quest, students write routinely in opinion, informational, and narrative modes, adjusting style for the task and audience indicated.
In fifth grade ELA, we begin a new unit on the Renaissance (European history, approximately 15th-16th Centuries). Students will continue to have spelling lists every couple of weeks, so watch those homework packets! Students will all have their spelling lists for the class spelling be in their Winter Break Homework Packets. In math, we will wrap up our unit on adding and subtracting fractions the week after break. Subtracting mixed numbers (such as 4 ½ – 2 2/3) has been pretty challenging for students, so it would be great to keep practicing. We will move on to multiplication and division of decimals and fractions the second week of January. We will continue to explore how energy and matter moves through various ecosystems in science! We are also excited that the 5th graders will have the opportunity to participate in the 10th Mountain Division Ski Down on Friday, February 24! They completed the unit for this unit in 3rd grade, and now they get to wrap it up with a day on the mountain. More information is coming soon!
Sixth graders will continue their work with rational numbers in math through January and then begin to explore algebra and equations/expressions. In the spring, we will study statistics and how it is applied in the real world. In ELA, 6th graders will finish the Chocolate unit in January. Yum! The following units include studying the Titanic, Greek mythology, and the novel, Summer of the Mariposas. During the second semester, 6th graders will learn about the Industrial Revolution and Ancient Rome/Greece in Social Studies. We will also do a Science unit about cells and living organisms. So much fun learning ahead in the new year! Thank you for continuing to talk with your child about what they’re learning at school.
