LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 1-6-23
Hello LCIS Families,
We had a great first week back at school. Thank you for helping to get your child to school every day so that they have the opportunity to work with their teacher and peers while learning. As one of our students shared with us today on his shirt:
On Wednesday last week we had our first community meeting of the new year where we honor students who had 95% attendance or higher. This means that these students only missed 3 or less days of school so far this year. Fantastic! We know that there is a strong correlation between attendance and academic achievement. Please send your child to school every day so that they can keep up with their learning.
What if my child is sick? If your child has a fever or is experiencing diarrhea or vomiting, please keep them home until they are free of symptoms for 24 hours. Otherwise, you may send your child to school. See the flier at the bottom of this Shout Out for more information.
At our community meeting we also honored students from every class in every grade level as our first semester HOWL point winners. These students received the most HOWL points, had no detentions and consistently showed our HOWL values. Congratulations to those students!
Our HOWL for January is collaboration. The targets for collaboration are:
* I communicate well by actively listening and explaining my ideas clearly.
* I work with others to achieve a common goal.
Your child will need their charged Chromebook at school every day this week. Students will take a reading progress monitoring assessment online called STAR. Your child has set a goal for this assessment. Ask them about what they are doing to increase their score and reach their goal.
Our last calendar survey asked for ideas from our stakeholders on ways we can improve the current school calendar. We have compiled ideas that were generated. Please provide your feedback on the ideas that have been generated. We will use the feedback from this survey to move forward into planning our future calendars.
This calendar will be open until January 6th at 5PM. Extended until January 13th at 5:00 pm!!

Each year, students in English language learner programs take the ACCESS for ELLs language proficiency test. The test measures academic English language proficiency for students learning English in our school and throughout our state.
This testing window is Jan. 9, 2023 through Feb. 10, 2023 and schools will begin testing for our English Language Learners next week.
Please contact Bunny Taylor, District Assessment Coordinator, if you have any questions! btaylor@lakecuntyschools.net 719-486-6800
Please remember to send your child to school with outdoor winter clothes! Students go outside for recess every day if the temperature is 10 degrees or warmer and the wind chill is 0 or warmer. We go outside if it’s snowing or clear. Students who are dressed for the weather enjoy themselves much more than those who are not.
LCIS is participating in the SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee again this year! Mark your calendars for February 8th at 8am in the LCIS Gym as this is when our crew spelling bee winners will compete to become the school champion and have the opportunity to compete at the state level. Students will be bringing home spelling packets over the winter break, so be sure to start quizzing them! Remember that in a spelling bee a student must say the word, spell the word, then say the word. Start building that habit now!
On Friday, January 21, Freight will host a Trivia Night with proceeds going to our LCIS Music Department. Come enjoy an evening with friends and help LCIS to purchase some ukuleles for our students! There is a flier at the end of the shout out with more information.
All grade levels have earned the Howl Point Challenge reward! The students will be going on an all day Leadville excursion to celebrate! Please see the letter below for all of the important details.
As we move into the second semester of school and planning for the next school year, we know there are many questions regarding the passage of the Healthy School Meals for All program (Proposition FF) in Colorado.
Lake County School District is still in the information gathering and planning stages but below is a summary of what we know about meal service now that the Healthy School Meals for All program has passed.
There are no changes to food service operations for the remainder of School Year 2022-23.
● Families should continue to complete school meal benefit applications as needed for the remainder of this school year.
● Meals will continue to be free for students that qualify for meal benefits.
● Meals will be charged at current meal prices for students who do not qualify for meal benefits.
● We understand that notices have not been going out this year if you have an outstanding balance.
○ IF your student has a balance, you will be receiving a notification with the balance and information on ways to pay the balance.
At this time Lake County School District is awaiting program details but with the information currently available we intend to opt-in to the Healthy School Meals for All program which will be available in School Year 2023-24
● Opting-in to the program means that starting next school year, all students will have access to reimbursable meals at their school at no cost.
● A la carte purchases will continue to be offered for a cost/fee. These purchases will be charged to the student’s meal account or the student may pay for the food items with cash.
As this program is developed by the Colorado Department of Education and information for school districts is made available, we will provide additional information for families to explain what changes might look like for the 2023-2024 school year. For more information on the Healthy School Meals for All program, view this community resource.
