LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 5-5-23
Hello LCIS Families,
Happy Cinco de Mayo!
We were able to resume our regular activities in the gym this week! We are so thankful that the leak repair was completed and that our building was declared safe by a structural engineer for our staff and students. We are also grateful for the care and concern demonstrated by our district leadership to explore all avenues before making the decision to allow regular usage to continue. Lunch, PE classes, sports, and community events are all happening again at LCIS – hooray!
This coming week is Teacher Appreciation Week! We love our entire staff and know that without the contributions of every single person in our building, we would not be able to serve our students in the way they deserve. Thank you for sending your children and allowing all of the employees at LCIS do what they are so passionate about – working with kids!
We held our re-scheduled Community Meeting in the gym on Wednesday. Students in 3rd grade led this meeting and presented a skit – with fantastic props! – to show what they had learned about the solar system. Our youngest learners demonstrated tremendous growth and leadership qualities! Please join us at our next Community Meeting on May 24th in the LCIS gym at 8:05 am.
🎨 The LCSD Art Show is just around the corner! Please mark your calendars for this amazing annual event that showcases the incredible artistic talent of students in all grade levels. There is a change of venue this year. For the first time, we will have the LCSD Art Show at Lake County Elementary School. This event will take place from 5 pm to 7 pm on May 18th and will include all of the wonderful booths that our students look forward to every year; rootbeer floats, cotton candy, face painting, flower potting and more! Can’t wait to see you all there!
Mark your calendars because LCIS will be hosting our Celebration of Learning on Tuesday, June 6th from 6-7:30! We now plan to offer our spring concert in conjunction with this event, so will have music presentations from our band students and each grade level. This will be in place of the previously scheduled Spring Concert at LCHS on May 31st.

English Language Development (ELD) Curriculum and Spanish Acquisition Curriculum
We are pleased to begin moving forward with the selection process for an English Language Development (ELD) Curriculum and Spanish Acquisition Curriculum. We are forming a team of educators to complete this work. The team will begin meeting in early May.
We will continue to keep you informed on this process and gather your feedback at appropriate times. We value your insight and appreciate the opportunity to work with you. Please be on the lookout for our community feedback and question/answer sessions that we will be hosting. During these sessions we would love to have our community’s feedback on the ELD and Spanish curriculum.
Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to Lorena Walker (lwalker@lakecountyschools.net)

Visit beautiful high alpine lakes, learn how to cook on a camp stove, sleep under the stars, make great new friends, and challenge yourself! The trip is free for all participants and will be run by the High Mountain Institute in partnership with Full Circle of Lake County. No experience is necessary.

ACADEMIC UPDATE:
6th grade students participated in a Socratic Seminar this week surrounding their study of the Titanic tragedy. A Socratic Seminar allows participants to gain deeper understanding of a complex idea or text through dialogue. The format encourages students to think independently. They discussed very profound questions about what factors affected the outcome of this unfortunate historical event. It was a great time of discussion and learning.
ATHLETIC UPDATE:
We have 2 new high school track & field school records!! Susie Bullock set a new girls’ pole vault record. Her mark of 9’6” beat the previous record by 8”! Jace Peters already had the boys’ pole vault record, but he improved his by 6” to 13’3.” At the Frontier League Track & Field meet on Tuesday, the girls’ team finished 3rd and the boys took 4th. Jace Peters was named Frontier League Male Athlete of the Year.
The middle school track & field league championship will be held at Homestake Peak School on Friday, May 12, beginning at 9 am. There will be an admission charge of $3/person. Payment will be accepted with cash or venmo.
Our cast for The Sound of Music is working diligently and will have a terrific show for our community May 11-13. You can get your tickets now at https://lakecountyhs.booktix.com.
Open gyms for middle school girls’ basketball will be on Sundays from 6-8 pm at the LCIS gym. 5th grade girls are invited to attend, but a parent will need to sign the Assumption of Risk form when they drop them off at practice. Please come in with your 5th grade student the first time she attends.
