Hello LCIS Families,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is wonderful to see that winter has finally arrived! With the snow comes slippery parking lots and sidewalks. Please remember to drive slowly and follow our drop off and pick up procedures to help keep our Panthers safe! Remember that we have one drop off line in the morning and two pick up lines in the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you so much for coming to the LCIS Winter Concert! The 6th grade band sounded great and the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders sang with enthusiasm and skill! There was even a special guest appearance by The Grinch! What a wonderful way to start the holiday season. Thank you so much to Mr. Corley, our music director, the Specials and Explore team, and the LCIS teachers and staff\u00a0 for making the evening run smoothly.\u00a0 Happy Holidays!<\/p>\n\n\n

Middle of Year DIBELS Assessment 12\/8-12\/18<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will begin our Middle of Year DIBELS testing on Monday. These assessments test for reading accuracy, speed, and comprehension. Our Beginning of Year composite scores, which represent an overall estimate of a student\u2019s reading proficiency by averaging scores from the subtests, show 40% of our students are reading at or above grade level with 23% of students approaching grade level, and 37% of our students well below grade level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every day that your child is in school they are working on increasing their reading and comprehension skills through whole group instruction and small targeted instruction. The extra reading that your child does at home or that you do with your child has a positive impact on their growth.  Talk with your child about doing their best on the DIBELS assessments next week so that you can help them become stronger readers and celebrate their growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winter Spirit Week is 12\/15-12\/18<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will be selling Santa and Elf hats for $1 beginning on Monday, December 15 and will sell them until they are gone!  Proceeds will benefit the Positive Behavior Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multilingual Assessment: ACCESS during January<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students who are English Language Learners will be taking the Access test in January. This is an exciting opportunity for students to demonstrate the English skills they\u2019ve developed in the past year. The test consists of four domains: Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. Each domain will be tested separately. Ask your multilingual scholar to show you the practice test online! They can open it from the home screen of their Chromebook, or you can use the WIDA website. Sample items for each grade level are here<\/a> for students to practice. Students may also watch a test demo here<\/a> so they know exactly what to expect. Watch out for more information next week, and reach out to the ELD teacher, Amanda Rogers (arogers@lakecountyschools.net), if you have any questions.        <\/p>\n\n\n\n

IXL Homework Update<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We saw a bit of a dip in our IXL practice time from students over the past couple of weeks. Please encourage your child to practice their ELA and Math skills. A little every day makes a big difference!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attendance <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had some strong attendance this week at LCIS. With only three weeks of school in December, we truly hope that you can help your child be at school every day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to Jeffrey Lazalde Acevedo! They won our Attendance Challenge and received a free pizza from The Famous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When students come to school every day, they build good habits, stay on track with learning, and feel more confident. Every day in school makes a difference!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cold Weather <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the arrival of December comes colder temperatures. As a reminder, students at LCIS go outside for recess every day if the temperature is 10 degrees or above with a wind chill of 0 or higher. Please help your child come to school prepared to be outside in cold weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
