Hello LCIS Families,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What a spectacular Community Meeting we had this week!<\/strong> Our third graders really shined with their narration of \u201cThe Making of the Great Bear\u201d a Native American story. We celebrated the scholars of the month for the habit of curiosity, had a lost and found fashion show, and announced the ticket winners for the Rockies game on May 20th. <\/p>\n\n\n

Our End of Year DIBELS testing begins this week.<\/strong> This is an assessment where students read out loud. One of the best ways that you can help your child is to have them read out loud every day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the beginning of the year to the middle of the year we saw a little growth with students who were reading at grade level and some decline with students who were reading below grade level. We are looking for more growth at the end of the year across all our levels thanks to the work your child has been doing with reading at school and home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monday, May 4th, marks the beginning of Teacher Appreciation Week<\/strong>! Please consider giving a note of appreciation to your child\u2019s teacher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, May 7th our 3rd graders will go to Hayden Meadows <\/strong>for their end of year nature-based learning experience. Students will be out of the building from 8:45-2pm. Please ensure that they are prepared for a day outside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upcoming:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, May 13th, our 6th graders will visit the Molly Brown Museum in Denver to learn more about this woman\u2019s survival story from her time on the Titanic. The 6th graders begin their final ELA unit on the Titanic soon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday, May 15th, the 6th grade band students will travel to Elitch\u2019s for a musical performance followed by some fun at the park. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wednesday, May 20th is the day that many students have been waiting for- the Rockies Baseball Game! If your child has missed \u00bd day of school or less this year, they automatically earned a ticket for the game. Many students also received a ticket due to showing perseverance on the CMAS assessments in April. We still have a handful of tickets left to award to students who are showing good effort and following expectations without reminders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students earned \u201cThe Rizzler Reward\u201d in April for exhibiting Curiosity.  They were chosen for this reward by asking thoughtful questions, seeking new information and taking academic risks. The Rizzler (AKA Mrs. Cook)  invited these students to play fun games in the gym to celebrate. <\/p>\n\n\n

Congratulations to Ms. Forget\u2019s crew for earning the class attendance reward! This crew earned extra time in the gym to play fun games.<\/p>\n\n\n

Homework- IXL:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We saw a slight bump with our IXL usage this past week. Let\u2019s see if we can finish the year strong by having students work on those ELA and Math skills each week for homework. Remember, 20 minutes a day can make a positive change!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Academic Update:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third graders<\/strong> are continuing their study of geometry in math this week. They are exploring the relationship between area and perimeter by creating rectangles of various sizes and shapes. Ask a third grader how many different rectangles they can make with a perimeter of 20 units! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 4<\/strong>th<\/sup><\/strong> grade<\/strong> is finishing a math unit on two-digit by two-digit multiplication and division. We have our math test on Monday. Our next math unit reviews fractions and decimals. In ELA, students have just finished reading the novel Treasure Island. Students are watching the movie to complete a compare and contrast activity, and next week, students will plan and write their own adventure stories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5<\/strong>th<\/sup><\/strong> graders<\/strong> have practiced applying and differentiating between two volume formulas for volume in math. Now, we are learning how to multiply mixed numbers. In ELA, we\u2019ve wrapped up our unit on Native Americans.  Native Americans have a deep connection to the land and we wrote persuasive essays to answer the question, \u201cWhich image best shows the relationship between Native Americans and the land?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students in 6<\/strong>th<\/sup><\/strong> grade<\/strong> are in the middle of writing essays about strengths and character traits.  In math, we finished up our variables unit and on Monday we will dive back into rates and ratios with some extended learning on percentages.  In Social Studies we are in the middle of our Deserts unit.  Everyone is looking forward to our field trip in two weeks to the Molly Brown Museum in Denver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Movement Motivates! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try building movement breaks into homework time – not after.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could have a 10-minute block for physical activity before school, too.  Running, jumping, anything that gets the body ready to sit still for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After dinner, you could take a walk around the block as a family and enjoy some spring weather together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We continue to monitor the measles in our schools.  We have not had any new cases.  We remain at one conformed case. Please go to the Lake County Public Health website<\/a> for up-to-date information including upcoming vaccination clinics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
