LCES Families, We had a great turnout last night at our K-2 Holiday Music Concert. Special thanks to Mrs. Bridge, staff, and of course the students for making this such a great success. Take a look at some of the pictures below. Next week, we have a very busy festive week ahead! We are looking forward to holiday spirit week where we’ve partnered with LCIS to create some fun days to show your holiday cheer. See the flier below for specifics. Holiday spirit week is Monday through Thursday. On Wednesday, we are excited to be hosting our Family Fun Night Winter Festival which is scheduled for December 18th from 6:00-7:30. The flier is also linked below. Santa will be in front of the fireplace for pictures, we will have cookie decorating in the cafeteria, face painting in the gym, and many more fun activities planned around the school. We hope to see you there! Lastly, The Center (preschool) has their Trail 100 gift celebration with Santa scheduled for Thursday, December 19th. The flier for specific times is also shown below in the “fliers” section. If you have any questions about any of the upcoming events, please reach out to Zee or Marissa in the front office (719-486-6890). We hope you and your family are enjoying December so far and we hope to see you at one of the upcoming events next week! Stay warm and enjoy your weekend! Tips of the Week
As we are anticipating Winter Break, here is a helpful article titled “A Parent’s Guide to Handling Children’s Extended School Breaks”. We recognize and understand breaks from school can be a challenging time for some families and we are here to support your child the best we can when they are at school. Mrs. Christy, our school counselor, is a phenomenal resource for students when it comes to stressful break times. Her contact information is 719-427-0105 or crtrujillo@lakecountyschools.net, if you feel you need extra support during these times.

Drop-Off Lane: Please use slow speeds in the drop off and pick up lane in the mornings and afternoons. Especially now with the icy conditions, we want to ensure our parking lots and school is the safest it can possibly be. Thanks for your cooperation! Do you know what BOOST is? Boost is an online learning literacy platform connected to our CKLA Amplify curriculum. This program is tailored for each student and the specific literacy skills they need to target. To log on to BOOST at home, your child will need their Clever badge which is located on the back of their yellow Thursday folder. Download the Clever app to your phone or tablet to get started on BOOST at home! Just 10 minutes a day is shown to significantly improve a student’s literacy skills. If you need help logging on or need an additional Clever badge, please reach out to your child’s teacher. HOWLs Challenge: We have a new HOWLs challenge for quarter 2! Students will try to earn as many HOWL Dollars as they can by December 16th for the chance to earn a special lunch with Mrs. Lovely and Ms. Rapke! The top six HOWL dollar earners in each crew will win. For each student who wins, we will send home parent communication on Dec. 16th and 17th. The special lunch will be held on Dec. 18th. Parent Volunteers: If interested in volunteering, we encourage parents to reach out to their child’s teacher or Mrs. Lovely to see where the biggest need of help may be. Sometimes this may look like making copies or laminating new math materials. We always appreciate the extra help! Attendance Reminder: If you know your child will be absent from school, please notify our front office staff. If your child is planning to miss school for 3 or more days, you should complete the Request for Pre-Arranged Absence Form in the front office. This form should be submitted three days prior to the absence so that we can notify your child’s teachers and appropriate support for your child can be put into place. We follow the district attendance policy, as follows: – After 7 absences, we require a doctor’s note to excuse all future absences. – At 10 absences, we notify parents/caretakers of our concerns in writing and meet to establish an attendance success plan. – At 15 absences (chronic absenteeism defined in BOE Policy JH), we hold an attendance meeting to discuss further actions as needed. Any further absences the parent/guardian must call and speak with the Assistant Principal directly. – At 20 absences, the Assistant Principal may refer the student to Nancy Abila the Juvenile Diversion Coordinator for the District Attorney’s office or Truancy Court. Thank you for your support in ensuring that our students are here and ready to learn each day! Food Program: Smart Bellies delivers kid-friendly food weekly and a bag of produce for our families. Register by filling out the form at https://forms.gle/5KyNS6wkEVv89uns6. We will leave the bags of food outside of your door each week. Lake County deliveries happen on Thursday each week. Please feel free to reach out to Smart Bellies at smartbelliesco@gmail.com or 970-368-2848 if you have questions, need special accommodations or more food. Hello Center Families, We hope this week has been well for your families and you are all staying healthy! We are starting to see some illness come through the program with both staff and students. This is to be expected as we enter colder weather. Here is a note from Colleen Nielsen, our district nurse. From the School Nurse, Colleen Nielsen, RN: We would like to make you aware that we have had a few students that went home with vomiting and/or diarrhea in our Pre-K population. We are monitoring for other cases as well as ensuring our classrooms are deep cleaned as needed. If your child is experiencing these symptoms, please keep your child at home for 24 hours after their last episode of vomiting and/or diarrhea. For more information on this, please visit: How Sick is Too Sick? Please remember to call the main LCES office at 486-6890 whenever your child is going to be absent from preschool. We have several fun events occurring this week. Please be sure to review all the fliers below and call the front office with questions. We hope families can join us for our Trail 100 celebration on Thursday December 19th. Check with your child’s teacher or see the flier below for your child’s classroom time in the library with our special guest. Monday is Merry Monday spirit day! I can’t wait to see all the fun holiday wear. Take care and enjoy your weekend! Tanya Lenhard –PreK Director Office phone: 719-486-6928 Cell: 719-293-1055 tdlenhard@lakecountyschools.net Classroom and Curriculum Updates: Home to School Connection: CKLA home to school connection tip: – Holiday spirit is in the air as the preschoolers engage with The Gingerbread Man story. This week’s homework includes a copy of the story. Encourage your child to retell and re-enact the story. There is also a recipe to bake your own Gingerbread Man at home. Enjoy! – Friendship boxes were introduced this week. This social skills activity encourages the children to help to comfort a child if they are sad, need a bandaid, or a hug. You can make a friendship box at home and include small stuffed animals, bandaids, tissues, a visual of a hug or high five. Encourage your preschooler to be a good friend to anyone in your home. Kelly Horning Assistant Director Office Phone: 719-486-6927 khorning@lakecountyschools.net Family Engagement Corner This is that time of year when a common phrase/greeting/question is “Are you ready for Christmas?” And while there are those people who were ready for Christmas the day after Halloween, I am sure there are also some people (like me) who haven’t even made a Christmas Shopping List yet (or at least I hope there are others). That question along with the never-ending emphasis this time of year on making unforgettable Christmas Memories can become overwhelming. The pressure of taking that perfect Christmas Family Photo (with the matching outfits, of course), and the push to give the perfect gift or host the perfect Holiday Party can get to be “JUST TOO MUCH” – especially in those households with children. The pressure Parents/Grandparents/Caregivers feel to create “Perfect Childhood Christmas Memories” can be daunting. Because of that pressure and the stress the Holidays can create, it is easy to become overwhelmed, anxious, and just plain stressed-out! Recognizing those feelings and remembering your children take their cues from you – meaning, if you are stressed-out and anxious then they can easily become stressed-out and anxious as well – which can lead to some “Not so Perfect” Christmas Memories. Take time to watch the following short video to help deal with Holiday Stress. Seriously, please watch it – it is only 2 minutes and 31 seconds long – and could possibly help make your Christmas and your child’s Christmas much more pleasurable. First with Kids: Dealing with Holiday Stress My sister sent me the following via text. Haha! So take a deep breath, laugh a little (because that text is funny), and allow yourself some grace if you are not ready for Christmas. A calm home filled with calm people, Christmas Movie Nights (with great snacks, of course), and a focus on all the blessings you have can help make Christmas 2024 one of your family’s best – even without the matching pajamas!
