For me, thoughts of November and Thanksgiving are a great reminder to be actively thankful for things in my life.
But how do you explain and cultivate a spirit of thankfulness and gratitude in children – especially in Toddlers and Preschoolers?
Please see the following article for information and helps on how to do just that!Fostering Gratitude in Toddlers and PreschoolersGratitude is a high-level concept that can be tricky for toddlers and preschoolers. In their early years, children are naturally self-focused as part of their development. However, as they grow, fostering a sense of gratitude helps them become more understanding of the needs and feelings of others. When Do Children Learn About Gratitude?Children begin learning about gratitude as early as age 2. At this stage, they may start expressing thanks when prompted. By ages 3 to 5, children can understand the concept of gratitude more deeply and show appreciation independently.Tips for Teaching Gratitude:It’s simple to build-in daily activities to help your child understand the needs and feelings of others. Below are five tips to get you started.Teach Them to Say Thank You
Encourage your child to thank people who help them. This can be a server at a restaurant, a sibling who helps them pick up toys or a friend who gives them a birthday gift.Express Your Gratitude
Let your children know why you are grateful for them. Be specific to make them feel special and loved. For example, say, “I appreciate how you help your brother pick up his toys.”Model Gratitude
Share what you are grateful for with your children. This can be through a blessing before dinner or a family gratitude journal where everyone writes down what they are thankful for.Support Charitable Activities
Get involved in charitable events or organizations. Whether donating clothes or toys, participating in a food drive or baking cookies for a new neighbor. Explain to your children what these actions mean to those who receive them.Be Consistent
Like all skills, gratitude is not learned in one lesson. Regularly practice and reinforce the habit of being thankful.www.firstthingsfirst.org/first-things/teaching-young-kids-about-gratitude/Please use the above link to access this article. You will also find more information on how to cultivate a spirit of gratitude in your child.
I have several friends who post daily on Social Media, one thing they are thankful for during the month of November. At the end of the month, they have a record of appreciation for that time period in their lives.
Why not try something like that with your family during the month of November? It would not have to be a daily thing and you would not have to post it on Social Media – just plan a simple way to discuss “thankfulness” with your family, encouraging each family member to contribute to the discussion.
To further encourage thankfulness, you could select a few things from your list and find tangible ways to say “thank you.” For example, your family could write notes and/or color pictures expressing your appreciation and deliver them to the local Fire Station (perhaps along with some homemade cookies – everybody loves cookies)!
So, even with your family’s crazy daily schedule (and even as things get more hectic as we move towards December and all that entails), try and be diligent in helping your child develop a spirit of thankfulness and gratitude helping them to become aware of all of the “good things” in their lives.
