WPE Parent Weekly Update 4/5/2020
Hello WPE Families!
I hope you are all well! We miss seeing your children and hearing the buzz of learning in our building.
I hope that you were able to pick up a learning packet for your child this past week. While I know that these packets do not replace the rigor of daily learning in school, I do hope that they are providing engaging opportunities for your child to continue studying and practicing his/her grade level skills. We will not be collecting these packets as we are working to minimize our interactions and follow the recommendations for social distancing.
*Please use these packets as works for your family, and do the work to your child’s ability/appetite. I highly recommend setting a schedule (there are recommended schedules in each packet) to help keep a sense of consistency and predictability to your child’s day. In my own house with our daughters at home, we involved them with setting the schedule and it has helped a lot! The more you can share in this experience with your child, the better! Also, please know that time with family is the most important thing right now – and if it can be spend exploring the outdoors or reading, that is wonderful! Lastly, I encourage you to limit screen time – recommendations are for less than 2 hours per day for our ages.
*Please keep in close contact with your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns. If you have not yet heard from your child’s teacher yet, please feel free to email them (addresses can be found here). Please include the best way to contact you, in case we don’t have updated contact information for you. We want to keep up our relationships with you, as it is super important!
*You may also call the WPE office – 719-486-6890– if no one is in the office to pick up your call (we are trying to work from home as much as possible), please leave a message.
*In a recent communication from the school district you learned that the school closure has been extended through April 30 and that it is likely that schools will remain closed through the end of the year. For the duration of the closure we plan to provide learning packets for all WPE students every two weeks. We will continue with the same packet distribution system at LCIS to keep all K-6 packets in one, convenient location. Our next packet pick up will be on April 13th.
(Please reach out if we can help with anything during this challenging time. Christy Trujillo (719-427-0105) and Amber Borcyk (719-293-1751) are more than happy to help you navigate these changing times and situations!
*As of right now, all school activities and events through May 1st have been cancelled. We will be waiting upon further direction from the Governor as to what our next steps will be, if school does or does not resume by May 1st. Please check our website and emails frequently for the most up to date information. Here is a link to the LCSD COVID-19 resources and update page.
Based on the current executive order that Coloradans stay at home due to the presence of COVID-19 in the state we have determined that for now we will hold students’ belongings at their schools until there is a better time for a safe pick up. If you or your student have an essential item that you need to pick up for a learning or health reason please call the front office and leave a message and we will get back in touch with you.
*If you have access to wi-fi and electronic devices, you can use the attached letters to access Lexia and RAZ kids as optional activities to do at home.
WPE Bedtime stories – please search and “like” this fun Facebook page featuring some of our favorite staff members reading books. I’m trying to upload videos more frequently since we don’t get to spend time together!
Lexia Core5 Reading – supplemental reading skill practice that Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade students can use at home (parent/sibling help is only needed if the apple in the corner is red!)
Kids A-Z – fun reading games which students enjoy! Books are in English and Spanish!
Engage NY Math Curriculum – click on the grade level from the Math column to see our math curriculum. You can also click on “Parents and Families” from the top menu for parent resource packets and helpful videos.
Thank you for your patience with the uncertainty for the weeks ahead – we will get you more information as we flesh out our plans and learn more about the state’s situation. I am grateful to get to live in this strong community made up of resourceful and compassionate people.
Please give your children hugs and smiles from all of us at WPE! We miss them so much and we know we’ll see them again in our school – we are just unsure as to when!
