WPE Parent Weekly Update 4/19/2020
Greetings, WPE Families!
We hope you receive this email well and are safe and healthy. It was a bit more like a winter postcard than a spring postcard for a few days, wasn’t it?
*New learning packets are available for the weeks of April 13th and April 20th. The packets are also available 24-hours under the LCIS awning, to be as convenient as possible. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have ANY questions or if you haven’t been able to get at-home learning activity packets. The younger your child is, the more guidance and structure they will need to be successful. Please break work into small time-chunks, follow a predictable schedule and celebrate successes! At-home learning is new for us all, and so please know that the two most important things you can do with your children are: read to/with and talk with your child as much as possible!
*This year we will be selling WPE yearbooks! Even though the year is ending differently than we expected, we still want to offer families the chance to buy a yearbook. Yearbooks are $25 and can be purchased through E-Funds (if you already have an account) or you can mail a check or money order payable to WPE (please write the student’s name and “yearbook” in the memo line) . You can mail the check or money order to:
Lynette or Rachael
West Park Elementary School
130 West 12th Street
Leadville, CO 80461
All yearbooks must be purchased by April 30th . We will put in an order and we will either arrange for them to picked up or mailed to your home.
*Please keep in close contact with your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns. If you have not yet heard from your child’s teacher yet, please feel free to email them (addresses can be found here). Please include the best way to contact you, in case we don’t have updated contact information for you. We want to keep up our relationships with you, as it is super important! You may also call the WPE office – 719-486-6890– if no one is in the office to pick up your call (we are trying to work from home as much as possible), please leave a message. We will return all calls within 24 hours.
*Lake County Build a Generation has also provided a form you can fill out if you are seeking volunteer opportunities or additional support. You can find these on their website at http://lcbag.org/
Please reach out if we can help with anything during this challenging time. Christy Trujillo (719-427-0105) and Amber Borcyk (719-293-1751) are more than happy to help you navigate these changing times and situations!
*As of right now, all school activities and events through May 1st have been cancelled. We will be waiting upon further direction from the Governor as to what our next steps will be, if school does or does not resume by May 1st. Please check our website and emails frequently for the most up to date information. Here is a link to the LCSD COVID-19 resources and update page.
*Student Belongings Based on the current executive order that Coloradans stay at home due to the presence of COVID-19 in the state we have determined that for now we will hold students’ belongings at their schools until there is a better time for a safe pick up. If you or your student have an essential item that you need to pick up for a learning or health reason please call the front office and leave a message and we will get back in touch with you.

April 20 – April 24: What’cha Reading? Week – In honor of National Library week, send us a photo of what you’re reading!
April 27 – May 1: Family Photo Week – Send a photo of you and your family. April is National Pet month, so be sure to include them in your photo!
May 4 – May 8: Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week – Draw a picture or dress up as your favorite teacher or staff member and tell us why they are important to you.
Resources for families:
WPE Bedtime stories – please search and “like” this fun Facebook page featuring some of our favorite staff members reading books. I’m trying to upload videos more frequently since we don’t get to spend time together!
Lexia Core5 Reading – supplemental reading skill practice that Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade students can use at home (parent/sibling help is only needed if the apple in the corner is red!)
Kids A-Z – fun reading games which students enjoy! Books are in English and Spanish!
Engage NY Math Curriculum – click on the grade level from the Math column to see our math curriculum. You can also click on “Parents and Families” from the top menu for parent resource packets and helpful videos.
Thank you for your patience with the uncertainty for the weeks ahead – we will get you more information as we flesh out our plans and learn more about the state’s situation. I am grateful to get to live in this strong community made up of resourceful and compassionate people.
Please give your children hugs and smiles from all of us at WPE! We miss them so much and we know we’ll see them again in our school – we are just unsure as to when!
