| LCES Families, Thank you families, for coming to our K-2 music concert last night! Congratulations to our student performers and Mrs. Bridge for a successful music concert. This upcoming week we have a Kindergarten and Preschool round up scheduled for Friday, April 25th from 11:00-1:00 in the LCES Library. This event is for upcoming Kindergartners who will turn 5 by October 1st and aren’t currently enrolled at The Center as well as Preschool registration for the 2025-2026 school year. For upcoming Kindergartners who will turn 5 by October 1st and aren’t currently enrolled at The Center, this is an opportunity to provide us with your mailing address for a registration packet that will be sent home during the summer. We will also be able to make copies of immunization records and birth certificates, required documents for kindergarten. If you know of any kindergarten ready students/families in the community please help spread the word. For Preschool at The Center: This is an opportunity to complete and/or submit your application for next year. We will have staff and computers onsite to help with Universal Preschool on-line registration. We can also help make copies of documents like birth certificates, financial records, ect. We want to be a part of your application success, come on down and we can help out! Invite a friend, refer a family, and help us spread the word. Have a great weekend! | April HOWL (Habit of Work & Learning) Focus: CuriosityFor the month of April, we are celebrating the HOWL of curiosity. Curiosity means, “I can explore new ideas by asking questions and seeking answers about the world around me.” The Student of the Month for each crew will be announced at our next community meeting on April 24th. If your student is chosen by their teacher, we will reach out at the beginning of that week to let you know! Semester 2 Attendance Challenge:  We also have an exciting semester-long attendance challenge to share! This semester, K-2 students who have 1 or fewer absences will have the opportunity to attend a Rockies baseball game in Denver at Coors Field on May 22nd! We will be checking attendance from Jan 6th-May 1st to see who qualifies. Families will be notified if your student has earned this opportunity the week of May 5th. The game is at 1:10 pm so students will come to school as usual, board the buses at 10:00 am, enjoy the game, and return back to school between approximately 5:30-6 pm. The tickets are offered to only students and staff at a reduced rate so we are unable to welcome parent volunteers for this event. Students may opt out of attending if parents so choose (Opt out deadline: May 7th). LCIS is also doing an attendance reward at this Rockies game as well so please look for specific information from LCIS in their parent communication as the criteria is slightly different between schools. Make sure your student is present at school every day as long as they are healthy in order to earn this opportunity! We are so excited for this special event! HOWLs Challenge: It is the last quarter of the school year which means it is time for our Quarter 4 HOWLS challenge! Your student will try to earn as many HOWL Dollars as they can by June 9th for the chance to have cotton candy and extra recess with the principals on June 16th! The top six HOWL dollar earners in each class will win. If your student wins, we will send home paper communication as well as a message from the front office. Students can earn HOWL Dollars by showing any of our HOWLs to any staff member in the school. The HOWL that we are focusing on for April is curiosity. From the School Nurse: Colleen Nielsen, RN Colorado has had its first reported Measles case this week. Measles is more than just a rash. It is s serious respiratory illness that can cause lifelong problems like hearing loss, brain damage, and even death. Measles is preventable with a vaccine. Please reach out to your provider to check on your student’s vaccination status. If measles was to be found in our student population, your student will be excluded if not fully vaccinated. | Hello Center Families, It was nice to have a little nicer weather occur, our kids are really enjoying their outside playground time. Remember that if your child is returning to preschool next year, we need you to complete next year’s paper application. Reach out to Rhonda DeVoe, Family and Community Partnerships Manager, if you have questions or if you need an application. You can also pick them up in the main front office. Remember to keep practicing the /x/ sound at home.Habitats is our last domain for this school year. We have learned about animals and plants and now we will learn about where they live together- in habitats. We will begin with the woodland habitat, and we will talk about trees, squirrels, deer, and birds. Come check out our classrooms to see our murals. Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks are stories you can read at home and are the set in the woodland habitat. In your yellow folders are at home resources to learn about habitats and practice naming plants and animals that live in the woodland habitat.Here is the link to the letter and sound video that was discussed at conferences. We have some kiddos who are “moving on up” to Kindergarten – and, oh, how we will miss having them with us every day! But we look forward to seeing them around school and love when they share with us all they are learning and doing! And we are blessed to have some kiddos returning to The Center in the coming year and we look forward to watching them grow and learn. We are also excited about the new kiddos that will join us in August! If your child will be returning to The Center, PLEASE complete and submit your 2025-2026 Application and any required documentation as soon as possible. You can find the application on our website or ask for one in the office. Also, if you know of any family, friends, or neighbors who are considering a program for their Preschooler, please let them know we are currently enrolling. Early Literacy: Building the Foundation for Reading Continuing with our topic “Helping my child learn to love books and reading,” this week we will look at one of the predictive variables proven to aid in building a strong foundation for reading: Alphabet Knowledge. Alphabet Knowledge is Letter Identification and Sound-Symbol Knowledge. There are twenty-six letters in the English Alphabet, which means there are twenty-six individual tools with which to make the words of the English language. In order to learn sound-letter correspondence, young children first need to learn to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet. Along with learning to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet, it is also important for children to learn the letters in Alphabetical Order (Think – “The A-B-C Song”). While few children today will experience the sensory pleasures of flipping through a physical card catalog at the library, alphabetic order still matters. It is how we organize our files, our citations, our attendance lists, and the spices on our supermarket shelves. It is also how we ourselves are organized within so many of the public spaces and institutions we pass through in our lives. Teaching young students to sequence the letters of the alphabet not only helps cement letter identification, but it helps them learn to sequence–an essential language and literacy skill. Without an understanding of before and after, young students would be hindered by everything from lining up to go to recess, to describing what they did over the weekend, to retelling a story read aloud by their teacher.
