Hello Center Families, October came and went just like that! There is nothing cuter than classrooms full of kids in costumes, teachers too! It was a good day yesterday and now we are on to November. As the seasons change and the mornings are colder, please send your child with items needed to play outside. This includes jackets, hats, gloves, boots, and snowpants if there is collective snow on the ground. We will still be going outside during the week and we want our preschoolers prepared with the right gear. We do have organizations that help provide winter clothing to children where this is a need. Please speak with your child’s family if this would be helpful to your family. We also want to send a small reminder regarding toys at school. Please do not send toys from home with your child. We have lots of toys here at school! It is challenging to keep track of them and toys from home can be hard to share with others. Nap items and special emotional support friends are the exception! These are important for a smooth day! As we enter the season of gratitude, I realize how grateful I am to see your children and your families every day. It makes my heart feel full! We will learn the names of many animals and how animal’s body parts help them survive. We will even have an Animal Hospital set up in our dramatic play center. In small groups we will be practicing telling stories, rhyming, counting syllables and practicing writing. Encourage your child to draw a picture of their favorite animal at home and “sign” their artwork while practicing writing their name. In this week’s home school connection, your child listened to a story about animals. Describe each animal on the page by naming and talking about its body parts. Animal Body Parts Riddles Room 130: Our youngest learners are engaged in learning all about different types of trees and different animals that use trees. Look in their classroom for tree artwork.Social Emotional: Check out your yellow folders for tips on helping your child learn to identify their emotions. Use the feelings chart to label how you and your child are feeling throughout the day. Happy Halloween! Have you filled your child’s bucket today? Be A Bucket Filler Kelly Horning Assistant Director Office Phone: 719-486-6927 khorning@lakecountyschools.net Family Engagement Corner: Happy November! As we look forward to the Thanksgiving Holiday, we will continue on the topic of nurturing gratitude in children. The following article has some great tips on how to help your child develop a spirit of thankfulness. Nurturing GratitudeMany parents worry about children being ungrateful. Here’s what you can do. When a child demands a toy or refuses to cooperate, it can feel frustrating—like they just don’t understand how lucky they are. Children’s demands might hit especially hard when we’re working long hours to make ends meet or just trying to get dinner on the table. We’re also reminded of how much need there is among families in our own communities and around the world. While young children can’t yet see the world from somebody else’s perspective, we can begin to build a sense of gratitude starting in the toddler years. Here are some ideas on how to model gratitude and create family traditions that focus on values of thankfulness and generosity:Show appreciation to your children. Slow down and observe more closely. You’ll see things you appreciate about your kids—then tell them! Appreciation can be an even more powerful motivator than praise. Sharing appreciation is a strong way to feel connected to one another.Show appreciation for others. Never underestimate the power of your words and actions. Your children are paying attention to the way you treat others, whether it’s friends, neighbors, a teacher, or the cashier at the market. They hear your tone with the salesperson on the phone. You set a great example when you model kindness, generosity, and gratefulness in your own everyday interactions.Use the word “grateful.” Children need to learn what this new word means. Explain that being grateful is noticing something in your life that makes you happy. “I’m grateful that it’s sunny today because it was raining yesterday.” Mention gratitude when you’re doing an everyday pleasant activity, like hanging out at the playground or eating watermelon on a hot day. Pause and say, “I’m so grateful for this day!” or “Wow, this is fun!” Your enthusiasm will be contagious.Make a Thankful Tree. Cut a tree trunk from cardboard or construction paper. Tape to a wall or window and cut out some leaf shapes. Ask your child to think of something they are thankful for and write one on each leaf. Then tape the leaf to a branch. Add your own “thankful things.” Have your child ask family members what they are grateful for and add them to the tree.Share stories of thankfulness, gratitude, and generosity.
