LCHS Student Senators Visit the Capitol
By Luke Finken
On Friday, March 31, the Lake County High School’s Student Senate traveled to the State Capitol in Denver. The students had arranged to meet with Speaker of the House Julie McCluskie to discuss policy and important issues to the LCHS leaders. The Senate is made up of 5 elected representatives from each grade 9-12 (20 in total) and is an elective class at LCHS.
When the students arrived at the Capitol they were greeted by Lake County grad, Jordan Sanchez. Ms. Sanchez is the owner and operator of her lobbying firm, Sanchez Policy Works, and is in the Capitol every day. She was a wealth of knowledge for the young Senators and an excellent tour guide for the historic building.
Around 1 pm, students then met with Speaker of the House (and Lake County Representative) Julie McCluskie. Speaker McCluskie welcomed the students into her office and began with presenting information about current and past policy wins and obstacles. She then took questions from the LCHS students and thanked them for their commitment to their role in government at their school.
After the 30 minute meeting, the students were able to watch the House proceedings on abortion and transgender rights from the observation deck. This proved to be a very powerful moment on the Floor of the House and in the minds of the Leadville observers.
Ms. Sanchez was able to secure a meeting with Lake County’s newly elected Senator, Mark Baisely, from Teller County. The Senator showed the students around the Senate floor and even let them in on a little known secret, the Senate balcony.
The Senators have been working on their own policy decisions and reveled in the opportunity to see their state government in action.
