News From LCHS 11/10/23
Dear LCHS Community,
It is hard to believe that we are heading for the end of our first semester! We continue to see great things happening in the classroom. We have begun learning walks with teachers who serve on our building leadership team. It has been great for our kids to see their teachers in other classrooms. Our staff and students are working hard.
On Tuesday, we will be having a lockdown drill. This will happen in the morning during crew. After the lockdown drill, students will have the opportunity to reflect on some questions with their crew teacher. There will be an alternative bell schedule to allow time for this to occur.
As a reminder, course finals will be held the week of December 18th. Finals are a significant time for students to synthesize their learning from the semester and are an important academic habit. They are held at the end of the semester to serve this purpose and to ensure all standards have been taught. We understand that family events or sickness can conflict with this timeline. Please reach out to the front office for the early final request form (available Tuesday) and process.
Thanksgiving lunch is this Thursday! For high school it will be held from 11:11-11:50 and for junior high 12:08-12:47. If you would like to join your student please bring $5 and sign-in at the front office. Our kitchen staff works hard to make this a great meal.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend,

Athletics
HS boys’/girls’ basketball practice starts NEXT MONDAY! For this first week, girls will practice from 4-6 pm and boys from 6-8 pm at the LCHS gym.
Check out this hype video for girls’ basketball. A famous athlete once said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Don’t let your student miss their shot at being part of something special! Join the basketball team next Monday!
High school nordic has already started and high school alpine skiing kicks off tomorrow. If you are not already connected to those coaches, please reach out to me.
Middle school alpine begins ski conditioning on Monday! 5-6 pm in the LCHS weight room. They will also meet from 4-5 pm on Thursdays. Middle school nordic will begin after Thanksgiving break.
We have a new wrestling program starting on Monday also! Wrestling will be for 7-12th grade girls and boys and will only be training this winter- no competitions. The team will meet in the LCHS Panther Den from 6-7:30 pm Monday through Thursday this first week. This is a great opportunity for newbies to try this sport!!
We have so many athletic offerings for a small school! We really encourage students to get involved with something!! Here are some points to use in conversation with your student.
Top 10 reasons to encourage your student to join a winter sport:
- It is good for their physical health.
- It can improve their mental health.
- It makes school more FUN!
- Involved students do better in their classes.
- It gives them something positive to do during the long, dark winter.
- It gives them the opportunity to get out of Leadville and visit some other places.
- They can make new friends.
- They will have new adults in their life who really care about them.
- They can discover skills that they never knew they had.
- It helps them become a better person by teaching commitment, teamwork, etc.
Cloud City Mountain Sports will be taking over the local high school mountain bike program in partnership with Lake County High School for the fall of 2024. There will be an informational meeting about the transition for any current 8th-11th graders on Monday, November 13th at 6:30 pm at the Leadville Race Series Retail Store, 316 Harrison St.
