LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 11-18-22
Dear LCIS Families,
November is a wonderful time to give thanks, and we are so thankful for your involvement in our school! We held our annual Thanksgiving lunch on Wednesday and we had more than 150 family and friends join us for this delicious meal. We are so thankful for our cook and custodian crew for helping to make the Thanksgiving lunch event a huge success.
We are also thankful for our community partnership with the Knights of Columbus who donated $3,500 for their Coats and Clothing for Kids campaign. We are bundling up student packages now and hope to have these sent home by Thanksgiving as we’re still waiting on some items to arrive. We had a high need this year to provide winter gear for students and needed to prioritize our spending on coats, snow pants and boots. We are currently looking for additional funds to purchase hats and gloves. In the meanwhile, please have your child ask Ms. Karly for these items if they need them as she has a few to give out.
This past week LCIS held two safety drills, a fire drill and a lockdown drill. In both exercises, students responded quickly and appropriately demonstrating their understanding of the importance of the drills and how responsible they are during these situations. This is also a good reminder to review the emergency and safety systems that you have in place in your home with your child/ren.
Please mark your calendar for November 30, 6-7pm for our next LCIS Parent-Principal Real Talk in the LCIS Library. At this meeting we plan to review the results of the conference survey and problem solve together. There will be interpretation and child care available. We hope you join us for this important conversation.
The Lake County School District is in an academic calendar review process. Two meetings have been held so far to hear from community members about what currently works and what changes may need to be considered in the future. If you did not have the opportunity to attend the most recent meeting or if you have had more ideas since this meeting, we would like to get your feedback! Please click here to leave your feedback. The third and final meeting is scheduled for Dec 13, 6:30-7:30 @ LCHS Library. Click here for more information about calendar community planning meeting agendas.
Our current attendance challenge will combine the months of November and December. Any student with an attendance of 95% or higher will participate in the celebration on December 15 at the end of the day. It will be a cookie decorating activity!
ATHLETICS:
MS girls’ basketball is running open gyms on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 pm at the LCIS gym. All 6th grade girls are invited to join them! The first official practice for that team will be December 5, when practice time will shift to 4-6 pm.
6th graders are also invited to participate in MS Nordic or Alpine skiing. Those practices will be ramping up after Thanksgiving. If you need help getting in touch with a coach, please reach out to Amy Peters, the Athletic/Activities Director who is happy to help! 719-293-0105 apeters@lakecountyschools.net

ACADEMIC UPDATE:
Health Class We are so thankful that Mrs. Sparks has been able to teach our Health Class during the months of November and December while Ms. Becky is out of the building. In the photos above, Mrs. Sparks and her students are doing an activity to reinforce healthy eating habits. The students had a relay race to reinforce the healthy habits of physical activity and eating healthy foods.
5th grade began their fourth ELA unit this week, Adventures of Don Quixote. Ask your student to describe Don Quixote as a character. Spelling tests are coming back! All three classes are watching the growth (or not!) of the microgreens we planted at C4. We have plants growing under 6 different conditions. We are (finally!) finishing Module 2 in math! We start fractions next week. Talk about fractions as you enjoy food together over the break!
6th grade is wrapping up their Mysteries and Investigations unit in ELA by reading and analyzing a few Sherlock Holmes stories. After Thanksgiving break, the students will be moving onto a unit about chocolate! In Math, 6th grade is also finishing their second math module, fraction and decimal operations. They will begin a new module focusing on rational numbers (positive and negative numbers) after we resume school following Thanksgiving. 6th graders are learning about several Latin American countries and their independence revolutions. They are enjoying learning about the history of Mexico and Haiti among other countries.
