Happy 60th Birthday to Head Start
In 1965, a powerful idea took shape: to give every child a chance to succeed no matter their circumstances. What started as a summer program to fight poverty sparked a nationwide movement. Since then, 40 million children and families have gained access to early education, health care, and additional supports they might not have had otherwise.
Now, in 2025, about 750,000 infants, toddlers and preschool children will receive Head Start services. Delivered through local schools, non-profits, and community organizations, Head Start programs operate in every state, most territories, and many tribal nations. At The Center, there are 30 Head Start preschool spots and 9 Early Head Start home visiting spots available to Lake County families who qualify based on eligibility factors.
Head Start programs have lasting impact on their communities through nurturing children and empowering families. The Head Start model of giving both children and families the tools they need to succeed in school and life has now been adapted to state and local models in recognition of the role strong families have on children, especially in the first five years of life. For every dollar invested in the Head Start program, there is a return of about $7 to $9 in benefits over the long term.
The heart of the Head Start program is the meaningful relationships forged between staff and families. Our teachers nurture, guide, and inspire every day. Their genuine care and concern for the children in their care is the foundation for those kids to become life long learners.
If you have ever been a Head Start student or parent, if you have ever served on Policy Council or the school board, if you have ever taught in a classroom, or if you have ever offered any of your time, talent, or funds in support of our program, please know that you are a part of our story and our successes. Thank you.
