News From LCHS 1/20/24
Dear LCHS Community,
Throughout this week there were beautiful moments of our students engaging, asking questions, and really grappling with content throughout our building. We have talented educators that are working hard to meet the needs of our entire student population with many different activities and lessons. It was wonderful this week to receive some emails and positive feedback from our teachers about our students.
Sadly, even though many wonderful things happened we saw unrest in our community. This was due to interpersonal conflicts which resulted in unfortunate decision making ending in physical altercations. This is disheartening and disappointing. We understand that there are many factors young adults deal with in their experiences throughout their youth and they make mistakes. As a building, we want to continue to help young adults learn to problem solve in a healthy and productive manner.
However, we want to be clear, physical altercations cannot be allowed at Lake County High School as they pose many safety concerns for our entire school community. Additionally, we do not view physical altercations as an appropriate way of dealing with or resolving conflict. If a student is made aware of a planned fight, we encourage them to report this to an appropriate adult so measures can be taken to intervene. Additionally, if students are experiencing or feeling bullied it is crucial they report it to an appropriate adult so we can begin our internal processes. Many times, we do have students report and we are able to intervene and help students prevent situations from escalating. We have a restorative practices program available and can help students work through their conflicts. If they reach out they will be supported to maturely solve conflict.
We will continue to refine our practices and work to support students and families as they navigate their time here at Lake County High School. This can only happen if strong partnerships are formed between school and family. We look forward to our continued work together.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend,
Scott Carroll
