LCIS FASO 2/4/22
Hello LCIS Families!
Thank you for all of your support with growing our students academically. It was such a bright spot to host our Annual Spelling Bee where students showcased their knowledge of spelling words. The work that you do with your child has a positive impact on their academic success. Keep on reading with your child and/or encouraging them to read daily. Also, continue to help your child learn their math facts by quizzing them with flashcards and getting them onto the IXL website to practice skills. CMAS, our state assessment for reading and mathematics, is on the horizon and students will be testing in April. Let’s keep working together to make sure that all of our students succeed!
💕Valentine’s Day is coming up in a couple of weeks! This year, it falls on a Monday. Our Valentine’s Day celebration will take the form of a lesson during Crew about gratitude and friendship at the start of the day. If you would like to send Valentine cards, please have your child write their own name in the “from” part, and leave the “to” name blank. Cards need to be pre-written, as we will be sharing these during Crew. For confidentiality reasons, we are not able to send out a class list. We realize there are cards that have candy or other things like stickers attached. Valentines will be collected and sent home. We will encourage the consumption of any candy at home. There is no expectation that students bring Valentine cards – it is an option for your family. We will have a nice time appreciating one another’s friendship regardless. 💗
If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher. Thank you for your partnership!
Thank you to those of you who attended Early Literacy Night this week! We hope you join Project Dream on Tuesday, February 8th for our next Family Learning Institute – Family ELA Night! This evening will focus specifically on literacy practices for K-6 students.
There will be a presenter from both LCES and LCIS discussing the literacy standards we cover, how we teach literacy, and how you can support your student at home. This event will be interactive for both you and your student. It will be held in the cafeteria of LCES from 5:30-7:00pm.
Dinner and childcare will be provided! Please click on this link for more details.
📚 ACADEMIC UPDATE
In math, 3rd grade finished up our module on area. We will begin fractions next week. Please continue to practice skip counting and multiplication facts with your child at home.
In English Language Arts, we are reading Peter Pan. We are learning about character traits, figurative language, and the genre of fantasy. The children are really enjoying the book.
In social studies, we are learning about Native Americans. We are learning about how Native Americans survived in different regions of North America. On Wednesday, students did a building challenge with sticks, cardboard, strings, clay, and paper. They had to construct a longhouse, in which the Iroquois Native Americans would have lived.
5th graders have been building background knowledge about the Civil Rights movement in Social Studies to help them learn about the time when Jackie Robinson was alive. They also had a Mid-Unit ELA Assessment, along with a Mid-Module Math Assessment. In Math, students are beginning to learn how to multiply a fraction by a fraction. Please continue to read with your child each night for at least 20 min, and be on the lookout for homework that is handed out every Thursday and is due the following Thursday.
Student’s in Mr Doug’s STEM class have been using their scientific understanding of forces and the engineering design process to build solutions to real-world problems.
5th Graders applied their knowledge of gravity, air resistance, and collisions to plan, build, and test a way to assist the United Nations in supply drops to rural mountain communities.
After learning about the over 20,000 shopping cart accidents occurring every year, 3rd and 4th graders applied their knowledge of Newton’s Laws of Motion to build a prototype of a new and improved shopping cart. Meanwhile 6th graders have been thinking like electrical engineers as they explore currents and circuits using our eleven new Snap Circuit Kits that we received thanks to the Climax Community Grant.
Please see below for our February lunch and breakfast menus. We are committed to being more environmentally conscious by posting the menus on the Friday Afternoon Shout Out and sending home paper copies by parent/family request. Please let the LCIS main office know if you need a print-out of the menus by calling 719-486-6830. Thank you!
Note: all menus are subject to change.
