LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 10-6-23
Hello LCIS Families,
Conferences are on Wednesday and Thursday next week! Our first Parent-Teacher conferences of the 2023-2024 school year will take place on October 11 and 12 from 12pm-8pm. Here is the link to sign up for a conference time that works best for your schedule. Students will only have school in the morning on these two days, will have a sack lunch in the classroom, and be dismissed at 11:15. Please call the LCIS office at 719-486-6830 by 10 am if your child will have different after school instructions.
LCIS had an evacuation drill on Wednesday and the students did an amazing job! Everyone in our building walked from the Intermediate School to the Lutheran Church. We had full accountability of staff and students at the evacuation site in less than 20 minutes! Students were back in their classrooms learning in just 33 minutes with minimal disruption to their school day. We are so thankful that we have such wonderful community partners, such as the members of the Lutheran Church, who are willing and able to share their resources with the children of Lake County. By having these drills, we ensure that everyone is comfortable with the process and that we can adapt and change our practices to fit the current needs. We hope that we never have to put our learning into practice, but we are all safer for having experienced this drill.
This Wednesday and Thursday, October 11 and 12, we will celebrate students who have demonstrated the Habits of Work and Learning (HOWLS) during the first couple months of school. These grade levels have earned over 12,500 HOWL points and as a grade level team they will participate in fun team building activities on either Wednesday or Thursday morning at the Community Field. 3rd and 5th will celebrate on Wednesday and 4th and 6th will celebrate on Thursday. Please be sure your child brings a water bottle and has appropriate outdoor clothing!

ACADEMIC UPDATE:
P.E. Happy Friday! At LCIS students have just finished an Ultimate Frisbee Unit during Physical Education. They focused on proper technique for throwing a frisbee backhand as well as different techniques for catching the frisbee. Students learned the basic rules of Ultimate Frisbee and participated in Ultimate Frisbee games at the Community Field. Students also participated in a “Space Invaders” tournament. Space Invaders is a fantastic team frisbee game with similar rules to Ultimate Frisbee, but with a much higher “fun factor”. Our next unit will be Badminton. Students will focus on the proper technique for holding a racket and striking the birdie as well as learning the basic rules. Students will also participate in team badminton games. Ernest Hemingway once said, “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.” Mr. Hemingway, clearly, never played badminton. Have a great week. Cheers!
6th graders have finished their first math module, Ratios and Unit Rates, with an end of module test on Thursday, October 5th. Next week they will start the second module, arithmetic operations involving decimals and fractions. In ELA, they have completed their Dahl essays about trouble-causing boys and adults and have begun a new ELA unit titled “Mysteries and Investigations.” They will explore the yellow fever epidemic and read/analyze several Sherlock Holmes stories.
After wrapping up the social studies unit about World Deserts with a project, 6th graders will begin studying Latin America Independence.
5th graders are finishing Unit 2 on Early American Civilizations in ELA. They will have a reading test on Monday and a Spelling, Grammar, and Morphology test on Tuesday. Please study your spelling words over the weekend and do the ELA review pages in your homework packet!
In math, we are now multiplying up to five digits with decimals up to the hundredths place! Please keep practicing multiplication and division facts with your child to make this work smoother.
ATHLETIC UPDATE:
MS Boys’ Basketball starts on Monday! 6th grade boys interested in playing basketball this season are welcome to sign up on a list in the office. Practice will begin on Monday, Oct. 9 in the LCIS gym and will run from 4 = 5:30 pm. Student athletes will need to have filled out the sports packet (usually done online during registration) and have a physical form filled out by a dr., and pay a $25 fee.
Sports Pictures: This fall we will offer families the opportunity to purchase DIGITAL team and/or individual pictures of their athletes. We will not be offering physical picture options, only an email with the digital pictures. The cost for the team picture will be $5 and an individual athlete picture will be $10, payable in cash or check to LCHS. Each team will get their picture taken on a different day/time, so check with your coach for that information. Here is the order form. (You only need half of it.)
Panther Gear! If you are looking for Lake County spirit gear, our Panther store is still open. This year there are additional sport-specific options. You can find those here. Spirit wear (in the bottom right hand corner) says Panthers instead of a specific sport. 5% of sales comes back to the athletic/activities department.
This year we will be charging for ALL GYM sporting events- high school and middle school.
Ticket prices will be $7/adults and $5/seniors for HS games and $3/adults and $1/seniors for MS games. We will NOT be taking cash at the front door, but we will take credit cards at the door.
You can also buy your tickets online in advance at: https://gofan.co/app/school/CO11697
The Lake County Annual Pass will get you into any home event- HS or MS, volleyball or basketball.
Reminder: Lake County students will need to show their school ID to get free entry into the volleyball games.
