LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 5-10-24
Dear LCIS Families:
What a great week at LCIS! We appreciate our students each and every day. We love that our chosen profession allows us to interact with your children and watch them grow to become important members of society. This week, we were also able to appreciate each other during Staff and Teacher Appreciation week! Because of the incredible kindness and generosity of our community and the parents of our students, we were able to celebrate the fact that we are part of public education. Thank you for sharing your children with us and making our jobs so fulfilling!
The Art Show is next week! We are so excited about this annual school and community event! We will again be holding the Art Show at LCES from 5-7 pm on Thursday May 16th. There will be treats to eat, take-home craft activities, face painting, a silent auction and more! As a special treat, our 3rd graders will perform a song for us at around 6 pm. As always, the treats and activities will be “paid for” by using tickets that you purchase upon entering the building. Tickets will cost $1 each and may be purchased using cash, checks, or – new this year! – credit cards. Please come join us for an evening of family fun and art appreciation!
LCIS will be offering 6th graders the option to choose band as a class next year! Our 5th graders will continue to practice their instruments during their lunch recess one to two days per week. In order to prepare for next year, Mr. Corley has scheduled an instrument tryout night for students interested in joining band next year. Flesher Hinton Music Co. will be at LCIS on Wednesday, May 22, from 5-7 pm. Students who are currently enrolled in 4th or 5th grade are encouraged to come check out the available instruments and start getting excited about making music! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr. Corley at acorley@lakecountyschools.net
Hiring committee Elementary principal stakeholder feedback sessions
Are you interested in participating in the Lake County Elementary School principal hiring process? We are looking for stakeholders of staff, parents and community members to engage in this process. We anticipate running a process similar to that of the high school principal, in which candidates will rotate through interviews with different stakeholder groups and provide feedback. If you would like to be involved, we would appreciate that you use this form to sign up. We anticipate the stakeholder interview sessions to be held the week of May 13-17. We intend to follow this event up with a staff and community meet and greet of finalists that would be open to the public the week of May 20th.
It is time again for our 33rd Annual Cleanup-Greenup! On May 18th, volunteers will meet at Riverside Park in Salida and work together to clean up 152 miles of the Arkansas River watershed in preparation for spring runoff. We will also be hosting a Gear Up For Summer event in Riverside Park in Salida the same day, where we will give free PFDs to the first 50 youth. Other community organizations will be present, helping our community to gear up for a safe and fun summer. Please see the flier below for further details!
Sixth Grade End of Year Celebration
Believe it or not, the school year is almost over!
The staff at LCIS are working hard to put together a very memorable 6th grade end of year celebration. Please join us on Thursday, June 13, at 2:15 pm in the LCIS Gym for our 6th Grade Celebration. Each student will get to play an active role in our celebration by making their own slide that has s baby, childhood and current picture! We will be working on these slides as a class in school.
6th grade students will need to upload some photos that they would like to use for their slide to their LCIS Google Drive account. Once the photos are there, we can begin the process of designing their individual and amazing slide.
The directions for uploading photos to the Drive App went home with your 6th grader, but please ask if you need another copy! Another option is emailing the photos to your school email account.
If you have any questions or need help with this process please reach out to Ms. Miller jmiller@lakecountyschools.net
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
Library and Tech students are showing so much perseverance with their typing skills, using home row keys and excelling in accuracy and speed. The typing speed and accuracy with some of our students is truly exceptional. We are currently enjoying finishing up our read out loud books together:
Sixth graders are exploring the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. With the wonderings of how they would survive in the wilderness alone.
Fifth grade is finishing The Wild Robot Protects by Peter Brown. We are exploring our changing climate and its effects on our world.
Fourth graders are finishing The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. We are discussing the value of friends and family in helping us get through challenging times.
Third grade is finishing The Wild Robot Escapes. We’re evaluating how friends can help us reach our goals.
Parents: All library books are due by June 3rd. Please ask your student if they have everything turned in. Notices about books have been going home with students.
3rd grade got to make and enjoy fry bread on Thursday thanks to Teri Cline! Thank you, Teri, for helping us expand our learning about Native Americans.
5th grade students are wrapping up a unit on Native Americans this week. We will have a spelling and unit assessment on Monday, 5/13. Students are writing persuasive essays answering the question, “Which image best shows Native Americans’ connection to nature?” based on three different images from tribes in California.
In math, we have transitioned from finding volume and area to discussing quadrilaterals (shapes with four sides). Ask your child the difference between a square and a rectangle! (Hint: All squares are rectangles because all squares have four right angles; however, all rectangles are NOT squares because they do not HAVE to have four equal sides…just four right angles).
Save the Date! Get ready for some spring singing! Mr. Corley and the LCIS students have been working hard on the music for the upcoming concert. We will have the LCIS Spring Concert at the LCHS Auditorium on Wednesday, June 12th. Students should arrive at 6 pm to get organized and the doors to the auditorium will open at 6:30 pm. Hope to see you there!
Rockies Rock is coming soon! We hope you are doing well! We wanted to share that enrollment has opened for Rockies Rock Adventure Camp this summer! Families can enroll here. We will begin confirming enrollments on May 1st.
We hope to share this information with previous camp families, and also invite new folks to join. Please feel free to share this message across the community 🙂
If you have any questions, or need assistance, myself and our Outreach & Enrollment Coordinator are happy to help! We also have updated information and FAQs on our website in English and Spanish.
