LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 1-27-23
Hello LCIS Families,
Our January Community Meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 1st in the LCIS Gym from 8-8:30. The 6th graders will host and will share a presentation about Greek Mythology. We will also honor our Scholars of the Month for Collaboration. Please join us for this fun event!
NWEA testing took place this past week. While many students met their achievement goals, it’s clear that we still have a lot of work to do so that all of our students can be achieving on grade level. Please encourage your child to use IXL as often as possible to practice targeted math skills. Students can access IXL through their Chromebooks. We recommend that students spend 20 minutes a day involved with the extra practice. Also, please ensure that your child is reading every day and continue to read to them or have them read to you! In addition, homework packets will continue to come home weekly in Thursday folders. Please encourage your child to complete their homework and celebrate with them when they do.
Attendance & School Data: Students who are consistently at school tend to see considerable academic growth. However, when students miss school, they get behind academically, and it creates a lot of extra work for our teachers. Instead of spending time responding to data or lesson planning, teachers have to take time to get their students caught up. As of Monday, January 23rd, 24% of LCIS students are chronically absent. That means they’ve missed 9 or more days of school this year. Looking at our school data (STAR, NWEA, CMAS), approximately 25% of our students are “Does Not Meet” or “In the Red” on our academic performance framework. The academic performance of our students consistently mirrors our attendance data. Even if your child is performing on grade level, his or her absences have negative repercussions for our school. Please send your child to school every day unless they are sick and schedule appointments/trips around our school calendar. Thank you for doing your part to support our school community.
LCIS is participating in the SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee again this year! On February 8th at 8am in the LCIS Gym our classroom spelling bee winners will compete to see who will become our school spelling bee champions. If your child is competing, they will have a packet filled with practice words. We hope that you will join us for this fun academic competition!
Our 4th graders will visit the National Mining Museum and Hall of Fame on Thursday, February 9th. If you have a 4th grader, please watch for the informational letter that should have come home in Thursday folders this week.
Valentine’s Day is coming! This year the holiday will fall on a Tuesday. As such, our Valentine’s Day celebration will take the form of a lesson during Crew about gratitude and friendship at the start of the day. If you would like to send Valentine cards, please have your child write their own name in the “from” part, and leave the “to” name blank. Cards need to be pre-written, as we will be sharing these during crew. For confidentiality reasons, we are not able to send out a class list. There is no expectation that students bring Valentine cards – it is an option for your family. We will have a nice time appreciating one another’s friendship regardless.
Also on Valentine’s Day our students will participate in a Friendship Concert that will take place at 2:30pm in the LCIS Gym. Each grade level will perform one song that will connect to our February Habit of the Month: Compassion. You are welcome to join us for this performance. If you’re not able to attend, but would like to watch the performance you can join the event via Zoom using the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83693865447?pwd=YTYxS3hmcFhBOG1iMkYxN2doeXl1UT09
This year the 5th graders will participate in the 10 Mountain Ski Down at Ski Cooper on Friday, February 24th. All 5th graders will have the opportunity to learn to ski and join the Serpentine- the group ski down from the top of the mountain. If you have a 5th grader, please make sure that you read the information packet, sign their permission forms and send them back to school as soon as possible.
We are still working on some glitches in our lunch balance notification system – thank you for your patience! You are always welcome to call the school and ask about your child’s lunch balance. Money for lunches may be sent to school with your child or you can pay for lunches on the district website – www.lakecountyschools.net – using e-funds. If you’d like to send a check, please make it payable to LCIS.
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
LCIS student artwork is displayed throughout the school. We are so thankful tour students and Ms. Good for sharing their talents and hard work with us!
A letter went home this week about the archery unit in P.E. Thank you for sending your child prepared to learn this fun new skill! In the photos above, Mr. Teesdale helps students follow proper form and use the correct technique when using a bow and arrow. The students are really enjoying this new unit!
3rd graders are beginning a new math unit on fractions! This is such a fun topic for students to learn about. They will practice writing and drawing fractions, placing fractions on a number line, comparing fractions and much more. Please take time to highlight how you use fractions in your day to day, such as using measuring cups and spoons, sharing food (for example, splitting a cookie in half) or noticing how much has been used or remains of something (we’ve got ¼ of our milk remaining, let’s add milk to the grocery list!). Connecting to fractions in our everyday lives helps students to develop their understanding of them.
5th graders are hard at work researching an artist from the Renaissance in ELA! Ask your student who they are researching and what they have learned so far. Their unit test will be Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 1 and 2. This will include a NEW spelling list that they will bring home this weekend, so study up! In math, students are learning how to divide fractions. It is very important to support students as they practice this skill. Please look at the examples provided with the homework and reach out to your child’s teacher with questions.
