LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 10-20-23
Hello LCIS Families,
Colleen Nielsen, our school nurse, and some high school volunteers were at LCIS this week to test our 3rd graders and our 5th graders for hearing and vision. Being able to see the materials and whiteboards and hear the instructions is crucial to academic success! If Colleen has any concerns regarding your child, she will send home a letter; otherwise, no news is good news. We are so grateful that our students have access to these screenings and that we have a caring professional to conduct them!
Our 6th graders will be taking the NNAT3 (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, 3rd Edition) and our 4th graders will be taking the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking on Tuesday, 10/24. These assessments measure the general ability and creativity of our students and help us to identify who may qualify for the Gifted and Talented (GT) program. Mr. Smith, our STEM teacher, and Mrs. Talbot, our principal, will create an extension project for the students who are identified and might benefit from an interesting challenge in addition to their regular classroom work. It is important that we provide meaningful assignments for students of all abilities and we hope that this type of learning will provide an opportunity to fully utilize their capabilities. We are so excited to jump into our GT program!
We will have our October Fire Drill on Tuesday, 10/24. The students and staff at LCIS have consistently shown that the safety drills conducted by our building leadership are useful and worthwhile. Our entire school community demonstrates Collaboration, Respect, and Responsibility by exiting the building in a silent and orderly manner. We have met or exceeded the expectation of full accountability in five minutes or less for each of our drills. Way to be safe, LCIS!
On Wednesday, 10/25, our 5th graders will lead the monthly LCIS Community Meeting. Please meet us in the LCIS gym at 8 am to watch a STEM presentation by all of the 5th grade classes. We will also honor our Scholars of the Month for Respect. During the month of November, we will focus on gratitude as a character trait and celebrate students who exhibit gratitude during our November Community Meeting on November 29.
Also coming up in November is our annual Thanksgiving lunch. Please join us on Wednesday, November 15 for this delicious meal at a minimal cost – exact prices coming soon!
Halloween will soon be here! We are happy to announce that we will host Healthy Halloween Celebrations at school for our students on Tuesday, October 31. Students are welcome to wear their costume for the entire school day. Costumes must be school appropriate and therefore fake weapons, face masks and face paints are not allowed. Please do not send any food with your child with the expectation that it will be shared with others. If your child does bring food to school, it will be returned home with them at the end of the day. If you would like to send a little Halloween prize to be shared you may, but this is not expected. Little prizes may include pencils, erasers, stickers, etc. Students who are not participating in the activities will have the option of joining fun alternative activities.

ACADEMIC UPDATE:
This month, Ms. Schock’s 5th grade class welcomed a new member to their Crew: Axol the Axolotl. Students put their research and informative writing skills into practice by composing essays that compared and contrasted a fish and an axolotl as a class pet. They showed craftsmanship as they worked through the writing process, revising and editing their papers for almost two weeks. As Arely Lazaro Perez noted in her paper, “Axolotls are adorable and you could do a lot more stuff with them than fish. You could draw a mustache on them through the glass! Another reason I think we should get an axolotl is if they hurt one of their body parts, they regrow them, but fish can’t do that.” The Crew was unanimous in their decision to adopt an axolotl.
“The process of acclimating our axolotl to the classroom has been a lot of work, but it’s been a blast seeing the engagement of the students,” reflects Ms. Schock. “Students are using math and science skills by measuring the temperature and pH of the water, and the whole 5th grade is practicing their HOWLS when they take turns viewing Axol before morning crew. Respect, responsibility, compassion… it’s all there! This has been a really positive experience.” Ms. Schock received a grant through Pets in the Classroom and has also received various donated items from community members.
ATHLETIC UPDATE:

You can also buy your tickets online in advance at: https://gofan.co/app/school/CO11697
The Lake County Annual Pass will get you into any home event- HS or MS, volleyball or basketball.
