LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 1-19-24
Dear LCIS Families:
What a snowy week we have had! We are absolutely indebted to our fantastic maintenance staff and custodial staff for keeping our sidewalks and parking lots cleared of snow and safe for all of us! We are also grateful for you, our LCIS families, for being flexible and accommodating our changing schedules and changing weather conditions. We love our mountain home – even with snowy challenges!
We would like to welcome Ms. Jennifer Miller to our LCIS Crew! She is teaching our 6th graders – the students who were previously in Ms. Ward’s class. She has 19 years of education experience, has taught most grade levels, and was a school librarian for five years. She has been teaching 6th graders for the previous 4 years. She is an avid reader, an animal lover, a huge football fan, and loves to be outdoors. We are so glad that Ms. Miller joined our crew!
Next week, our students will take the mid-year DIBELS assessment. This is a one-on-one reading test that allows the teacher to focus on your child alone and evaluate their reading skill level. The data they are able to collect from this test allows the teacher to support the reading growth of each of their students.
The last week of January our students will take the NWEA test. This is a collection of formative and interim assessments that help teachers identify unique student learning needs, track skill mastery, and measure academic growth over time. It is important for teachers to know what students know in order to take them to the next level!
The Habit of the Month for January is Collaboration. The definition of collaboration for our school crew is “I communicate well by actively listening and explaining my ideas clearly. I work with others to achieve a common goal.”
Please come to our next Community Meeting, January 31st, led by our 6th graders! We will honor the Scholars of the Month who demonstrate the habit of collaboration.
LCIS is looking forward to its annual Spelling Bee! Our school-wide Bee will take place on Wednesday, February 7th at 8:15 in the LCIS Gym. Spelling Bee word lists have been sent home. Help your child study for the first round of spelling, which will take place in their classrooms toward the end of January. The winner of the classroom Bee will participate in the school-wide Bee. We will also ask that our runner up speller prepare for the school-wide Bee in case the top speller is not available that day and they will get to participate. If you would like an additional word list, have your child ask their teacher for more words. You can learn more about the Scripps Spelling Bee here.
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
In the art room at LCIS, students are focused on learning realistic drawing techniques. 3rd and 4th graders are working on scientific drawings, and 6th graders are learning techniques for drawing portraits. Students are drawing a portrait of a famous person they admire!
PROJECT DREAM UPDATE:
Project Dream is excited to continue programs this spring! Find all spring information, including updated bus routes, here: https://www.lakecountyschools.net/project-dream-spring-information/

The Lake County Annual Pass will get you into any home event- HS or MS, volleyball or basketball.
