LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 1/12/24
Dear LCIS Families:
We have had a great first week back at school! It’s been so fun getting back into the learning and routines of our daily life at LCIS. We have welcomed some new students and reconnected with the returning students, staff and teachers here at school. We have some new employees, too! There will be more about them in next week’s Shout Out. We are CREW!
Our hearts may be warm, but our weather has been so cold! Our goal is to allow the students to get some fresh air and sunshine every day. Students will go outside if the temperature is 10 degrees or above and the windchill is zero or above. Coats, hats, boots and gloves are really important! Please send your child ready to enjoy our Leadville winter weather!
The proceeds from tonight’s Friday Night Trivia at Freight will benefit the LCIS Music Department! Please consider attending this fun event and supporting the musical arts at LCIS!
Student Progress Reports for Semester 1 went home in backpacks yesterday. We are so proud of the students at LCIS! Please call the office if you do not receive your child’s progress report or if you have any questions. Our next Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for March 20-21, but you are always welcome to contact the LCIS Staff! Please call 719-486-6830 or go to our website (www.lakecountyschools.net) to contact your child’s teacher by email.
We began ACCESS Testing this week for our students who are bilingual. We give this test annually to make sure that our students are progressing towards English proficiency. There are four components to this test; listening, reading, writing and speaking. We hope to complete these tests with the 90 identified students within the next couple of weeks. It is so impressive how quickly these students acquire our language!
Not only are we conducting the ACCESS test, January is also the month for our mid year assessments. Students will take the mid year DIBELS test this month and will also take a mid-year writing assessment. These evaluations will guide the instruction to maximize our time with students for the rest of the year.
The Habit of the Month for January is Collaboration. The definition of collaboration for our school crew is “I communicate well by actively listening and explaining my ideas clearly. I work with others to achieve a common goal.” Please come to our next Community Meeting, January 31st, led by our 6th graders. We will honor the Scholars of the Month who demonstrate this habit.
Our Food Service staff is the BEST in the business!! They tirelessly prepare delicious, nutritious food for our students and then serve them with a smile! It is a lot like each of us having a personal chef who is keeping us happy and healthy! Thank you Gaby, Heidi, Maria, and Karina!
Below, students enjoy homemade posole, homemade cornbread, salad, and fruit.
The Lake County High School Student Senate ran a toy drive from December 11th through December 21st. On the first Friday of winter break, December 22nd, the toys were brought down to Denver and donated to the Children’s Hospital Colorado South Campus in Highlands Ranch. The hospital staff were incredibly grateful for all of the new toys. The toys will be given to all children around the hospital (inpatients, outpatients, and any other kids or parents who need toys). The total of the donations was estimated to be over $2,000. The toy drive was an amazing experience and was a huge success! Lake County High School Student Senate would like to express our gratitude to all the principals of the district who quickly got on board with the toy drive and helped to get the donation boxes up and running. We would also like to say how grateful we are for everyone who donated toys.
LCIS is looking forward to its annual Spelling Bee! Our school-wide Bee will take place on Wednesday, February 7th at 8:15 in the LCIS Gym. Spelling Bee word lists have been sent home. Help your child study for the first round of spelling, which will take place in their classrooms toward the end of January. The winner of the classroom Bee will participate in the school-wide Bee. We will also ask that our runner up speller prepare for the school-wide Bee in case the top speller is not available that day and they will get to participate. If you would like an additional word list, have your child ask their teacher for more words. You can learn more about the Scripps Spelling Bee here.
