LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 2-9-24
Dear LCIS Families:
We had such a great week at LCIS! Our students completed the mid year writing assessment, we completed the ACCESS assessments for our dual language learners, and we had a school wide Spelling Bee. Our students have been busy learning and expanding their minds. We are so thankful that we are allowed to work with your children and watch them grow!
We had our annual school wide Spelling Bee last Wednesday and it was awesome! There were 12 spellers – one from each crew class – competing to be the LCIS Spelling Bee Champion, and the winner was….Gabriel Mascarenas! We are so proud of the brave students who won their classroom Bee and then stood up in front of the entire staff, student body and our guests to compete for the school championship. Way to go LCIS students!
The top 12 spellers at LCIS!
Thank you to our judges: Dana Green, Sue Hammerton, Kathleen Fitzsimmons and John Nelson.
Mrs. Talbot begins the competition with a brief summary of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Valentine’s Day is next Wednesday! Our Valentine’s Day celebration will take the form of a lesson during Crew about gratitude and friendship at the start of the day. If you would like to send Valentine cards, please have your child write their own name in the “from” part, and leave the “to” name blank. For confidentiality reasons, we are not able to send out a class list. Cards need to be pre-written, as we will be sharing these during crew. We realize there are cards that have candy or other things like stickers attached. Valentines will be collected and sent home. We will encourage the consumption of any candy at home. There is no expectation that students bring Valentine cards – it is an option for your family. We will have a nice time appreciating one another’s friendship regardless.
Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
The winter months often show an increase in coughs and colds. This sometimes makes it uncomfortable for your child to go outside during recess time. We will allow students with doctor notes to stay inside, but the expectation is that all students will get as much fresh air and activity as possible as long as the temperature is 10 degrees or above with a windchill above 0. Time spent in natural outdoor environments has been found to lead to increases in cognition. The benefits of both exercise and nature exposure suggest a positive impact on brain function when both factors are combined. Thank you for sending your child with all of the necessary winter gear so that they can go outside and boost their brain power!
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
During the Library / Tech time Mrs. Osborn encourages a love of books by reading aloud to each class. Reading to children, either at school or at home, improves comprehension because they are not distracted by tricky words or being in the spotlight. Most of all, it is awesome to listen to a good story!
3rd and 4th graders are listening to The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. This is the first book in a series that focuses on Roz the robot who opens her eyes for the very first time on a remote wild island. After caring for a gosling, she begins to feel like the island is her home. Then one day, her mysterious past comes back to haunt her.
5th graders are listening to Wonder by R.J. Palacio. This book tells the story of Auggie, an ordinary kid with an extraordinary face. He is entering public school for the first time ever as a 5th grader. The story highlights a community’s struggle with empathy, compassion and acceptance. This is so fitting because our Habit of a Learner this month is Compassion!
6th graders are reading The Wild Robot Protects by Peter Brown. This is the 3rd book in the series about Roz the Robot. The book just came out in September, and these students are excited to continue hearing about the adventures of Roz as they have already listened to the first 2 books in the series.
Lake County School District will be adopting a new math curriculum for K-6th grades in 2024. Please fill out this survey to give us feedback on where our current math program is successful and where we can improve.

PROJECT DREAM UPDATE:
Project Dream is excited to be the recipient of a $5,000 grant award from the Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Foundation and Leadville Race Series! The funds will be used to purchase updated STEM supplies and Cooking Club materials. Project Dream runs Cooking Clubs at the Lake County Elementary School, Lake County Intermediate School, and Lake County High School. STEM Clubs are run at all three schools plus on El Camioncito (Mobile Learning Center). At the elementary level, students participate in No-Cook Cooking where they learn to make fun treats for themselves without the use of an oven or stove. At this level, students are also introduced to the basics of STEM through science experiments and construction projects with STEM materials. At the intermediate level, students move into Cooking with an experienced leader using different kitchen tools. Students also become more advanced in their STEM skills, learning advanced creation techniques and coding skills. Once students reach the high school level, they take on the role of Club Leaders alongside an Adult Sponsor, leading other students in cooking and baking techniques plus individualized STEM interests. Project Dream is eager to continue these successful projects with support from Leadville Trail 100 and Legacy Foundation.
Project Dream is excited to continue programs this spring! Find all spring information, including updated bus routes, here: https://www.lakecountyschools.net/project-dream-spring-information/
