LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 2-16-24
Dear LCIS Families:
Students and staff at LCIS embraced our Habit of a Learner this week – Compassion- by celebrating Valentine’s Day. We focused on appreciating each other and expressing kind thoughts. We hope your week was also filled with friendship and joy.
Next Wednesday, February 21st, we will have a special musical presentation by Swallowhill Music. During this performance, musicians will share songs of mountain men, ranchers, miners and farmers. They will finish the assembly with recognizable and modern songs. The audience will have a chance to play period-relevant instruments with the musicians! The performance will take place in the LCIS gym next Wednesday from 1:00-1:45 pm.
The winter months often show an increase in coughs and colds. This sometimes makes it uncomfortable for your child to go outside during recess time. We will allow students with doctor notes to stay inside, but the expectation is that all students will get as much fresh air and activity as possible as long as the temperature is 10 degrees or above with a windchill above 0. Time spent in natural outdoor environments has been found to lead to increases in cognition. The benefits of both exercise and nature exposure suggest a positive impact on brain function when both factors are combined. Thank you for sending your child with all of the necessary winter gear so that they can go outside and boost their brain power!
The Lake County School Board has an opening. We will be appointing a new member to the board to complete the current terms that expire November 2025 at which point candidates may choose to run for election. If you are interested, please submit a letter of intention to the District Office (328 West 5th St.) by Feb. 28th. You may address this letter to the Lake County Board of Education. Interviews will be held at the regular School Board meeting on March 4th (6:30 PM District Office/Zoom). We hope to seat new board members at the March 25th meeting and they will be sworn in at this time. There are more important details in the flier below!
The spring conferences will be here before we know it! Please use this link to schedule a meeting time with your child’s teacher for either March 20 or March 21 from noon to 7:30 pm. Students will attend school from 8 am to 11:15 am on conference days. Students will have sack lunches in the classroom and the busses will run their regular routes. Looking forward to seeing you all!
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
In Spanish Language class students have been studying the Spanish words for time by asking questions like “¿Qué hora es?” and “¿A qué hora es la clase de español?” They are also studying the Spanish words relating to the date by asking “¿Qué día es hoy?” Students practice with daily writing, reading presentations, and handouts. Students use the Quizlet app on their Chromebooks on Tuesdays. All of the students are also learning about the verb to be by using the acronym “DOCTOR” (T for time in this case).
On Thursdays students study culture. They are learning about the top ten famous festivals or celebrations in Spain. There are handouts to read and analyze, and questions to answer. Students studied “Día de San Valentín o del Amor y la amistad” which included an activity that allowed students to color a card and write a short Spanish message to a relative or friend.
Third grade began our Viking unit this week with some hands-on experience in the snow! Thanks to GOL, third graders were able to ski on a “frozen river” to reach their destination, explore new lands searching for resources and building shelters, and build their own long ships out of snow! In math students are deepening their understanding of fractions. Ask your student what the numerator and denominator stand for.
Fifth grade students had a walking field trip to the Herald Democrat office on Wednesday this week. The students were impressed by how LARGE the printing press was , the number of mechanisms it takes to produce a newspaper, and the moveable type that looked like stamps.
Lake County School District will be adopting a new math curriculum for K-6th grades in 2024. Please fill out this survey to give us feedback on where our current math program is successful and where we can improve.
