LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 3-8-24
Dear LCIS Families:
The week before spring break is always filled with extra energy at LCIS. We hope you all enjoy some time together next week and rest up for the big push to the end of the year. Have a wonderful spring break and we will see you on March 18th!
We had a lot of fun celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday by dressing up all week. Students who participated were eligible for a daily drawing. There were two winners per classroom each day. Mrs. Osborn, our wonderful librarian, gave away nearly 100 books to students at LCIS this week. It was a great way to focus our excitement and further instill a love of reading.
Hats and Stripes Day Crazy Hair Day
Mrs. Osborn and some of the book winners show off their selections on Pajama Day.
Spring Conferences are the first week back from Spring Break. Please use this link to schedule a meeting time with your child’s teacher for either March 20 or March 21 from noon to 7:30 pm. Students will attend school from 8 am to 11:15 am on conference days. Students will have sack lunches in the classroom and the busses will run their regular routes. Looking forward to seeing you all!
Please visit the Scholastic Book Fair at the Elementary School during conferences!
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
This week, the 6th grade participated in a fishbowl discussion where they talked about the concept of loss in the book, Summer of the Mariposas. They used text evidence and a specific protocol to address different examples of loss during the first 7 chapters of the book.
PROJECT DREAM UPDATE:
Project Dream (21st CCLC) and Get Outdoors Leadville! are very excited for Spring Break Camp, running during normal school day hours, Monday, March 11th through Thursday, March 14th! With a similar setup to Rockies Rock, this free day camp will include all types of offerings including: snow games, sledding, biking, and play at multiple sites around Lake County. Additionally, kids will participate in team-building activities and all-camp celebrations. Meals and transportation will be provided by the school district.

ATHLETIC UPDATE:
Schedules for MS soccer are on our online calendar: https://chsaa.rschooltoday.com/public/genie/1518/school/445/date/2024-03-29/view/week/ Go to View Schedules on the right panel. Click on the sport you want, and then hit View. It will pull up the specific schedule you are looking for, and you can print it or upload it to your own calendar.
Middle school boys soccer parents:
We have had an overwhelming turnout of MS soccer boys! I am working to find additional games, but getting everyone playing time will be a challenge. Parents, please be gracious with our coaches and understand that their objective is player development and not necessarily winning games. Please also be aware that disrespectful and defiant behavior at school will result in your athlete losing the privilege of playing in games. If you have any questions, please reach out to me.
Track & field for middle school boys and girls will start practice on March 25.
If you are looking for summer activities for your 3-8th grade athlete, consider sending them to basketball camp! There will be one in Glenwood Springs July 9-11. You can find details here: https://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/camps/camp.asp?name=GlenwoodSpringsCamp1
LCSD, with the support of the consultant team, 2Partner, has been conducting a math curricula and instructional audit over the last year. Outcomes of this work were presented to the Board of Education on January 29th, 2024. We are taking the next steps and seeking staff and community feedback on Bridges Mathematics as the Team’s recommendation for math curriculum for PK-5th grade students starting next school year. Please join us during conferences on March 20th and 21st in the entryway of LCES or LCIS to check out the proposed math curriculum and provide your feedback.
How the Curriculum was selected: A team of volunteer staff (The Math Curriculum Evaluation Team) worked with 2Patner to develop a math instructional philosophy to guide the work. The Philosophy was shared to the Board of Education in January.
Math Philosophy: At Lake County School District, student access and equity are at the forefront of instruction. Our goal is for all students to:
- Gain the confidence, tools, and expertise to engage in challenging mathematical problem solving
- Build fluency and a solid math foundation for future learning
- Find meaning and value in math education that leads to a choice filled life
- Deepen conceptual understandings to create connections and engage with big ideas
- Develop a positive math identity around the universal language of math, through rich mathematical discourse, creativity, fun, and exploration
The team used this philosophy to review and propose a mathematics curriculum. After a thoughtful process in which a highly rated (by EdReports), standards based curricula was analyzed, the best scoring curriculum for grades PK-5 was Bridges Mathematics.
The Math Curriculum Evaluation Team is taking the next step in this process and setting up a time for staff, parents, and community to preview the Bridges curriculum and provide feedback. Please join us during conferences on March 20th and 21st in the entryway of LCES or LCIS to check out the curriculum and provide your feedback. Once we receive your feedback, it will be compiled with our staff feedback and presented to the school board at the end of March with the potential final recommendation to the Superintendent of Schools.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
The Math Curriculum Evaluation Team
