LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 1-13-23
Hello LCIS Families,
We had another busy week of learning at LCIS and we are all looking forward to the long four-day weekend. We honor Martin Luther King day on Monday and therefore school next week will run Tuesday through Friday. Attendance is so important for your child’s learning success. Please help to get them to school every day.
All of our students took their middle of year STAR Reading Benchmark assessment this past week. Many of our students showed excellent growth! Be sure to ask your child about how they did and continue to encourage them to do their best work at school.
All grade levels have earned the Howl Point Challenge! The students will be going on an all day Leadville excursion to celebrate! Please see the letter below for all of the important details.
Lunch will be eaten at CMC. Students filled out a survey this week choosing to either bring their lunch from home, get lunch from school, or bring exactly $7 (CMC accepts only credit cards, so students must have exact change) to buy lunch from the Coronado Cafe at CMC. Please check with your child about their lunch choice and plan accordingly!
Students will be tubing, skating and watching a movie during their field trip. We have listed the movies below. All movies are rated PG. Please call the school if you would like to make alternate activity plans during the movie presentation.
3rd Raya and the Last Dragon 4th Light Year
5th Light Year 6th Rise
Drop Off and Pick Up Please remember that parents should pick up and drop off their students in the main parking lot. We have been noticing that some students are being dropped off in the upper lot near the back doors to the gym. The upper lot is too narrow to accommodate a proper flow of traffic and it is dangerous for staff and students. Thank you for helping us all to stay safe!
Our last calendar survey asked for ideas from our stakeholders on ways we can improve the current school calendar. We have compiled ideas that were generated. Please provide your feedback on the ideas that have been generated. We will use the feedback from this survey to move forward into planning our future calendars.
This calendar will be open until January 13th at 5:00 pm!!

Each year, students in English language learner programs take the ACCESS for ELLs language proficiency test. The test measures academic English language proficiency for students learning English in our school and throughout our state.
This testing window is Jan. 9, 2023 through Feb. 10, 2023 and schools will begin testing for our English Language Learners next week. Please contact Bunny Taylor, District Assessment Coordinator, if you have any questions! btaylor@lakecuntyschools.net 719-486-6800
LCIS is participating in the SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee again this year! Mark your calendars for February 8th at 8am in the LCIS Gym as this is when our crew spelling bee winners will compete to become the school champion and have the opportunity to compete at the state level. Students should have brought home spelling packets, so be sure to start quizzing them! Remember that in a spelling bee a student must say the word, spell the word, then say the word. Start building that habit now!
On Friday, January 21, Freight will host a Trivia Night with proceeds going to our LCIS Music Department. Come enjoy an evening with friends and help LCIS to purchase some ukuleles for our students! If you are unable to attend this event, but would like to donate, you are welcome to do so! There is a flier at the end of the shout out with more information.
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
In math, 5th grade began a new unit: multiplying and dividing fractions. In ELA, we continue to dive into the Renaissance. Ask your child about this fascinating time period. Please remember to turn in your child’s ski down field trip packet ASAP! That trip is on Friday, 2/24. This is a special day to commemorate the 10th Mountain Division and ski at Ski Cooper for free!
6th grade is starting the second semester with new modules in all subjects—so fun!!
In ELA, students will begin the fourth module in the CKLA curriculum, Greek Myths.
The Greek myths in this unit explore questions and themes that help the students understand the world around them and their role in it.
6th graders will begin the fourth math unit, Expressions and Equations. This unit will allow students to explore beginning algebra concepts from variables to formulas and reinforce previous learning of mathematical properties and operations. These lessons will culminate in the application of solving expressions and equations. In Social Studies, students will be learning about Ancient Rome and Greece for the next month and a half.
3rd grade students in Ms. Lynette’s music class were able to work at different stations. Some students were able to practice on the keyboards. Ms. Lynette helps a group of students practice rhythm using cups. Music helps with so many higher level thinking skills – and it is so much fun!
Mr. Teesdale started a new P.E. unit this month – students will be learning archery! In the pictures above, he is instructing the students on the proper stance and each student has a rope which is also called a string bow. Mr. Teesdale worked extensively with GOL! to make this archery unit possible and our students are excited to learn a new skill!
3rd grade art classes are learning to make pinch pot turtle sculptures. Ms. Good demonstrates the best methods for creating a turtle and also displays an example of a completed creation. Art contributes to a well rounded creative mind and we are so lucky to have an expert in our school community!
HOWL:
Our HOWL for January is Collaboration. The targets for collaboration are:
* I communicate well by actively listening and explaining my ideas clearly.
* I work with others to achieve a common goal.
As we move into the second semester of school and planning for the next school year, we know there are many questions regarding the passage of the Healthy School Meals for All program (Proposition FF) in Colorado.
Lake County School District is still in the information gathering and planning stages but below is a summary of what we know about meal service now that the Healthy School Meals for All program has passed.
There are no changes to food service operations for the remainder of School Year 2022-23.
● Families should continue to complete school meal benefit applications as needed for the remainder of this school year.
● Meals will continue to be free for students that qualify for meal benefits.
● Meals will be charged at current meal prices for students who do not qualify for meal benefits.
● We understand that notices have not been going out this year if you have an outstanding balance.
○ IF your student has a balance, you will be receiving a notification with the balance and information on ways to pay the balance.
At this time Lake County School District is awaiting program details but with the information currently available we intend to opt-in to the Healthy School Meals for All program which will be available in School Year 2023-24
● Opting-in to the program means that starting next school year, all students will have access to reimbursable meals at their school at no cost.
● A la carte purchases will continue to be offered for a cost/fee. These purchases will be charged to the student’s meal account or the student may pay for the food items with cash.
As this program is developed by the Colorado Department of Education and information for school districts is made available, we will provide additional information for families to explain what changes might look like for the 2023-2024 school year. For more information on the Healthy School Meals for All program, view this community resource.
