LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 12-15-23
Dear LCIS Families:
We are almost there – the end of first semester! Teachers and students are busy finishing up their current academic units and basking in the joy and excitement of the holiday season! We are looking forward to a busy week – keep reading for details of your child’s activities on the last week before winter break!
The week of December 18-21 is Holiday Spirit Week at LCIS!
Monday, December 18 Holiday Head Gear LCIS will sell Hats for $2!
Tuesday, December 19 Silly Socks Day
Wednesday, December 20 Holiday Sweater Day
Thursday, December 21 Pajama Day
We are looking forward to our Community Meeting on Wednesday! Our third graders will lead this assembly with a play based on the fable Androcles and the Lion. They have learned so much about ancient Rome during their last ELA unit that they wanted to share this snapshot of their newfound knowledge. Also, our students of the month in each classroom will be honored for their commitment to Craftsmanship. Please join us if you can at 8 am in the LCIS gym on Wednesday, December 20th!
We will have an Attendance Celebration – the last one of the fall semester – on Wednesday Dec. 20. Students who have missed ½ day or less for the 15 days between Thanksgiving Break and Winter Break will be invited to attend a craft activity in the LCIS gym.
Panther Pride Winter Wonderland will take place on Thursday, December 21. Students will get to enjoy fun outdoor activities during their specials time. They will also get to warm up with hot cocoa! Thank you, Specials and Explore team for creating such a great event for our students!
HOWL Celebration! Each grade level that earned 12,500 HOWL points in the third quarter will celebrate this accomplishment by having popcorn and watching a movie in their classroom. It also happens to be Winter Wonderland day and Pajama Day – what could be more fun than that? It is a great way to kick of the winter break!
HELP! Our Lost and Found is taking over the hallway – and Ms. Sordyl and Ms. Stepro might be buried in the overflow! Please check to see if your child is missing any coats, hats, boots, gloves – or even pants! It is very helpful if your label your child’s belongings with their name so that they can be easily re-united.
The LCHS Student Senate is conducting a Toy Drive for the Holidays! LCIS students are welcomed and encouraged to bring new or unbroken, gently used toys and books to LCIS until December 21st. The LCHS Student Senate will be donating these toys to local charities. Thank you in advance for making the holidays a little brighter in our community!
LCIS is already looking forward to its annual Spelling Bee! Our school-wide Bee will take place on Wednesday, February, 7th at 8:15 in the LCIS Gym. Spelling Bee word lists have been sent home. Help your child study for the first round of spelling, which will take place in their classrooms toward the end of January. The winner of the classroom Bee will participate in the school-wide Bee. We will also ask that our runner up speller prepare for the school-wide Bee in case the top speller is not available that day and they will get to participate. If you would like an additional word list, have your child ask their teacher for more words. You can learn more about the Scripps Spelling Bee here.
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
6th graders are wrapping up the Independence of Latin America unit in Social Studies and then will start the Ancient Greeks unit in January.
In ELA, 6th grade is diligently working on learning about the history of chocolate by scanning, close reading, and writing informative and/or argumentative passages. Before winter break, they will engage in a debate about whether or not chocolate should be served in schools every day.
In Math, rational numbers are the theme of the month. We are focusing on negative and positive numbers in the real world. Also, the students are learning about the four quadrants of a coordinate grid and how to find places on the grid given a set of coordinates.
PROJECT DREAM UPDATE:
Reminder: There are no Project Dream programs on Friday, December 22nd.
Project Dream (21st CCLC) and Get Outdoors Leadville! are very excited for Winter Break Camp, running during normal school day hours, Tuesday, January 2nd through Friday, January 5th! This free day camp is open to K-6 students currently enrolled in Project Dream’s after school and/or Friday programming. If you are interested in your child attending, please complete this form (https://forms.gle/wsHzggPWMe5CGdYN9) no later than Tuesday, December 12th.
ATHLETIC UPDATE:
