LCES Families, What a snowy April week it’s been! Spring in Leadville is either gorgeous with bluebird skies or snowing several inches. Who knows what we will get! Thanks for continuing to send your students with their winter snow clothes to go outside during recess. The turf field is beginning to melt and mud season is upon us. Next week on Tuesday, we have a lockdown practice drill. See the letter below for more information. These drills are important to practice and we are committed to providing the safest school possible. This is our second lockdown drill this school year and will be our last. Thank you for talking with your student about these practice drills. Have a wonderful weekend, Panthers! Brandi Lovely, Principal blovely@lakecountyschools.net |

April HOWL (Habit of Work & Learning) Focus: Curiosity For the month of April, we are celebrating the HOWL of curiosity. Curiosity means, “I can explore new ideas by asking questions and seeking answers about the world around me.” The Student of the Month for each crew will be announced at our next community meeting on April 24th. If your student is chosen by their teacher, we will reach out at the beginning of that week to let you know! March Attendance Breakdown Attendance Goal: 94% This month’s average daily attendance: 92.96% (116 school days & 189 students) K92.42% 1st 94.34% 2nd 91.9% Semester 2 Attendance Challenge: We also have an exciting semester-long attendance challenge to share! This semester, K-2 students who have 1 or fewer absences will have the opportunity to attend a Rockies baseball game in Denver at Coors Field on May 22nd! We will be checking attendance from Jan 6th-May 1st to see who qualifies. Families will be notified if your student has earned this opportunity the week of May 5th. The game is at 1:10 pm so students will come to school as usual, board the buses at 10:00 am, enjoy the game, and return back to school between approximately 5:30-6 pm. The tickets are offered to only students and staff at a reduced rate so we are unable to welcome parent volunteers for this event. Students may opt out of attending if parents so choose (Opt out deadline: May 7th). LCIS is also doing an attendance reward at this Rockies game as well so please look for specific information from LCIS in their parent communication as the criteria is slightly different between schools. Make sure your student is present at school every day as long as they are healthy in order to earn this opportunity! We are so excited for this special event! From the School Nurse: Colleen Nielsen, RN Colorado has had its first reported Measles case this week. Measles is more than just a rash. It is s serious respiratory illness that can cause lifelong problems like hearing loss, brain damage, and even death. Measles is preventable with a vaccine. Please reach out to your provider to check on your student’s vaccination status. If measles was to be found in our student population, your student will be excluded if not fully vaccinated. If you have questions, please email me at cnielsen@lakecountyschools.net Parent Volunteers: If interested in volunteering, we encourage parents to reach out to their child’s teacher or Mrs. Lovely to see where the biggest need of help may be. Sometimes this may look like making copies or laminating new math materials. We always appreciate the extra help! Be sure to ask your child what they have learned about these two famous women. Also in your yellow folders were at home resources to help your child learn to be a problem solver at school and at home. Throughout the next several weeks teachers will be introducing and supporting children with problem solving at home. Here is the link to the letter and sound video that was discussed at conferences. Oh, I hope so! There is something magical about being surrounded by books and knowing that behind each book cover is either an adventure waiting to happen or some new and exciting information that will benefit you and your life or perhaps you will find exciting details about places you dream of visiting one day or you may even discover a new skill or hobby that you are really good at!I know many of you understand the importance of reading and the important role it will play in your child’s future as many of you selected the topic “Helping my Child learn to love books and read” on the “Family Partnership Agreement” you all completed at your child’s orientation. As you know, learning to read is a major focus in your child’s first years of school. However, somewhere in upper elementary, the focus shifts to not just learning to read but making the jump to “reading to learn.” If your child has not developed solid reading skills before that shift, their educational growth will be affected. However, the great thing is there are proven things you can do now as a parent to set your child on the path to loving to read and helping them be successful in their future educational endeavors. Over the next several weeks, we will take a look at some of those proven ways to help you instill a love for reading in your child. Please take note of the “tips” below to start that process. Oh, and more great news, the Lake County Public Library is open and ready to assist you and your child on your reading journey. Exciting adventures ahead!Rhonda H.
