LCIS FASO 4-8-22
Hello LCIS Families!
Our state student assessments, CMAS, will take place starting this week! CMAS is an online assessment and each student will need their chromebooks this week to take the tests. Please help your child prepare by having them charge their chromebook at night so that they are ready for the online assessment. Please have your child at school every day this week and ready for their assessments. If your child has to miss a day of school during testing, we will work with your child so that they can make up their test.
Our habit for the month of April is Perseverance and the learning target for perseverance is: I stick with tasks even when I feel tired, frustrated, or challenged. This is a great time to talk about perseverance with your child as we will be taking our annual CMAS (Colorado Measures of Academic Success) exams next week. These tests may seem very long and very challenging to our students, but it is important that they have the encouragement, support and “perseverance” to do their best work. Thank you for encouraging your child! Please see below for the testing dates.
DATES | CMAS ASSESSMENT |
April 11-14 | ELA grades 3-6 |
April 18-21 | Math grades 3-6 |
April 25-29 | Science grade 5 |
LCSD has been conducting a Literacy Audit over the past year and our Literacy Team would like to share some information with the students and families. They will be showcasing the Core Knowledge Language Arts program in the LCIS Library on Thursday, April 19th at 6:30 p.m. Please click this link for more details.
Our 5th grade students were able to do some fieldwork up at CMC on Thursday. They are studying avalanches as part of their Natural Disasters unit. There were three stations up at CMC, one of which was the mobile learning center, that allowed students to understand how avalanches form and some strategies for making sure they are safe in the wilderness. We are so grateful for the help and guidance from our community partners; Colorado Mountain College and GOL!
ACADEMIC UPDATE
3rd graders have been studying graphs in math. They made a human bar graph indicating which animal was their favorite pet. Dogs were the overwhelming favorite as you can see by the long line of students on the right side of this picture.
4th grade is deep in their math unit on decimals. Students have been working with decimals using a variety of forms: area models, number lines, number bonds, unit form, and expanded form. 4th graders are getting comfortable fluently converting between fractions and decimals. In ELA, students are working on writing a broadside (opinion piece) from either a Patriot or Loyalist perspective. They have also been working incredibly hard to get ready for CMAS!
In 5th grade, students are wrapping up their Jackie Robinson presentations. Ask your student who their athlete was and what their social change was! How was it similar to Jackie Robinson? How was it different? We had a great time at CMC learning about avalanches for our upcoming unit all about Natural Disasters. In Math, we learned about area and how to find the area when our length and width was a mixed number. Don’t forget that CMAS testing is next week. We can’t wait to see our 5th graders persevere through the test and show everything they have learned this year! Please make sure they are getting a good night’s sleep and not staying up late on technology!
6th grade is in the middle of their geometry unit and is learning how to find the area of composite polygons. We will begin working on volume and using the volume formula to solve for the volume of rectangular prisms soon. We are continuing our work in our ELA module, Remarkable Accomplishments in Space Science, while reading the book Hidden Figures. Our work is focused right now on discovering and proving habits of character that the women in the book display. In social studies, we are finishing our learning about immigrants in the late 1800s/early 1900s and moving on to the Industrial Revolution in the United States.
With spring fast approaching, the GOL! team is working hard to bring you another awesome summer of Rockies Rock Adventure Camp. See below for more information
Important dates:
April 18th – Open enrollment begins (there will be a two-week open enrollment period)
May 2nd – We will start confirming admission and filling spots
Important update:
After much discussion and consideration, we will be shortening camp by two weeks to better align with the LCSD summer break. This new schedule will make it more possible for LCSD staff to work at camp, thus helping us address a camp staff shortage. The resulting four week schedule will allow us to put our best efforts into creating magical experiences for your kiddos, while also providing LCSD staff with some much-deserved time off.
Rockies Rock 2022 Schedule:
Session 1: July 5th – 14th (due to the July 4th holiday, the first week of camp will run T – Fr)
Session 2: July 18th – 28th
We appreciate your understanding and support, and hope this announcement gives you ample time to plan your summers accordingly!
Please see below for our lunch and breakfast menus. We are committed to being more environmentally conscious by posting the menus on the Friday Afternoon Shout Out and sending home paper copies by parent/family request. Please let the LCIS main office know if you need a print-out of the menus by calling 719-486-6830. Thank you!
Note: all menus are subject to change.
There are many exciting events happening in our community every month – too many for us to list on this communication! Please click this link to access the Community Calendar for upcoming events.
