LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 9-23-22
Hello LCIS Families!
Our LCIS Outdoor Art Show and Open House is here! Join us on Tuesday, September 27, starting at 5:30 on our playground for a music performance followed by a walk through the woods to look at the wonderful creations made by our students. After the outdoor art show, our school will be open so that you can tour the building, see presentations of student work and chat with your child’s teachers. This will be the perfect time to visit your child’s core classroom as well as their specials and explore classrooms. We hope you can join us!
Please help your child remember their charged Chromebook every day. Students will be taking the STAR progress monitoring assessment the week of October 3rd and it is especially important that they have their device in their backpack every day charged up and ready. Thank you for your help!
We are very excited to have begun another great school year in Lake County! Here at LCSD our most important job is to keep your children safe. In our School Safety section on our website, we have important information about the tools and strategies we use to promote safe schools. This information is only to keep you informed, not to cause concern. We want you “Prepared, not scared”.
In addition to the steps we take to make our schools safe and secure, we also work hard to make sure our schools are welcoming to all students, families and community members. One of our commitments is that bullying has no place in our schools. In this Safety Section I have included a brochure documenting our bullying prevention program. This document outlines how we define bullying, and how we respond to a report of bullying behavior in one of our schools. Another commitment is to Title IX and Nondiscrimination. It is important that not only staff, but students as well understand their rights in these areas. More Information about Title IX and Nondiscrimination can also be found on the school district site at www.lakecountyschools.net or click HERE for the School Safety webpage.
Please watch for this information coming home to your mailing address or contact the district office (719-486-6800) for a hard copy.
Thank you,
Corbin Logan, COO/Safety & Security
Did you know that Project Dream offers a weekly meal delivery for your kids? Any student in Lake County School District is eligible to enroll in this program regardless of their enrollment in Project Dream out of school programs. Each Thursday, they will drop a bag of food at your house for your child or children to have over the weekend. If you are interested, please register using this link: www.smartbellies.org/lake
ATHLETICS:
Home athletic events for next week:
MS volleyball- Monday, September 26, LCIS at 4:00 pm
MS volleyball- Wednesday, September 28, LCHS at 4:15 pm
(If your student wants to attend these games, you must attend with them or call to put them on the Event Attendee List- see details below)
If your student (6th-12th grade) wants to attend a sporting event at LCIS, you must either attend the event with them, or you must call Alison Sprague at 719-486-6954 to get them on the Event Attendee List. Students whose names are not on the Event Attendee List will be turned away at the door and will need to find a way home. RSVP’s must be called in to Alison before 2:30 pm the day of the event. We do ask that you call to add your student EACH TIME you want them to attend a sporting event at LCIS. Parents, thank you for your help on this. We are trying to encourage students to be positively engaged at these events, and we appreciate your partnership in that effort.
Any 3-5th grade students who wish to attend volleyball games at LCHS must be accompanied by an adult.
LET’S GO PANTHERS!!

ACADEMIC UPDATE:
3rd graders have just begun Unit 2 in ELA, we are learning all about animals and classification! We are learning our multiplication and division facts and making brochures about continents. Ask a third grader about a continent they’ve learned about!
4th graders wrapped up their ELA unit on personal narratives and are excited to begin their study of Medieval Europe. In math, students also finished their first module, which centered on place value, comparing numbers, rounding, and multi-step addition and subtraction word problems. They are continuing to learn about mountains in social studies – a relevant topic given where we live! Classes are getting into a nice rhythm and Crews are forming strong classroom communities.
5th graders began their second ELA unit on Early American Civilizations (Maya, Aztec, and Inca) this week.. The Big Idea for this unit is that civilizations existed in the Americas before Europeans arrived. Ask your child to describe characteristics of a civilization, as well as any geographical features of the areas where the Maya, Aztec, and Inca lived. In math, we wrapped up Unit 1 on Place Value and Decimal Fractions and are moving on to Multi-Digit Whole Number and Decimal Fraction Operations (multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions). Please continue to test your students on their multiplication facts – ten minutes a day can make a big difference!
So many exciting events happen in our community every month – too many for us to list on this communication! Please click this link to access the Community Calendar for upcoming events.
