LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 2-24-23
Hello LCIS Families,
Dr. Seuss Spirit Week begins Monday! Mrs. Osborn, our fabulous librarian, has planned a week of fun and celebration for the staff and students at LCIS in honor of Read Across America Week. Students who demonstrate any of our HOWLS (Habits of Work and Learning) and those who are participating in our spirit week will be able to put their name in a daily drawing. Two students from each crew will win a free book each day next week – that is almost 100 free books for our students! The daily winners will be announced each morning and they will get to choose a book from the library. Along with the books each CREW receives small prizes for everyone, one for each day; pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers and bookmarks. Thank you, Mrs. Osborn, for helping us celebrate the joy of reading!
Spring Conferences are quickly approaching. Sign up here! Conferences will be held from 12 noon to 8 pm on March 8th and 9th and both of these days are half days for students followed by conferences. Your children have been working on their portfolios and are looking forward to sharing them with you! There will be no Project Dream programs during conferences. Please be sure to communicate after school transportation with our front office staff. Half days at LCIS begin at 8:05, with the building opening at 7:30, and ending at 11:15. Buses will run their regular routes. Students will still have the option for breakfast at school and lunch will be served prior to dismissal.
5th grade is hosting our February Community Meeting on Wednesday, March 1st starting at 8:05 in the LICS Gym. Please join us as we celebrate our scholars of the month for compassion.
LCES is hosting a Literacy Night on Thursday, March 2nd from 6-7:30. Join us for Adventures in Reading! See the flier below for more information about this family fun event.
Interest letters for Spring Break Camp were sent home with Project Dream students the week of February 6th. If you did not receive one and are interested in your student attending camp, please reach out to the Project Dream Site Supervisor at your child’s school! LCIS Site Supervisor is Blanca Rodriguez, brodriguez@lakecountyschools.net or 719-293-0115
Full Circle of Lake County is a local non-profit organization that offers program groups for high school, middle school, and 4th and 5th graders. They offer the children in our community the opportunity to participate in social activities, and provide leadership opportunities. They also offer a mentoring program for the youth of Leadville and they are in need of local adults to join their team. Please see the flier below if you are interested in supporting the youth of Lake County by becoming a mentor!
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
3rd grade has been working hard to finish their Viking unit! Students are writing their own Norse myth using characters from Norse Mythology. Next week we will begin our 7th Unit: Astronomy.
As we work through our study of fractions, concepts are becoming more and more challenging. Students are learning that 4 halves is the same as 2 wholes, and that 15 thirds is the same as 5. Building their fluency with fractions greater than one whole helps them to notice patterns and creates a strong correlation between fractions and division. Take a look at your student’s homework this week and see what patterns you can identify together!
Here is Julio demonstrating one fourth on our life size class number line 😊
4th graders have wrapped up their geology unit in ELA. They’ve been working hard to learn all about volcanoes, earthquakes, plate tectonics, and other forces that shape Earth. Students are learning about text structures, including how to write strong compare and contrast paragraphs. In math, 4th graders are extending their knowledge of fractions. They are comparing mixed numbers and improper fractions greater than 1, adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, and solving challenging word problems. Their module assessment is right around the corner!
5th graders were excited to spend the day at Ski Cooper today where they will practice their alpine ski skills and watch the serpentine procession commemorating the 10th Mountain Division who trained there during WWII! Next week, 5th grade will host the Community Meeting on Wednesday, 3/1 from 8-8:30 a.m.. Students from Mrs. Green’s and Ms. Beery’s classes will demonstrate the Egg Drop Challenge from STEM class. Last day to turn in homework to earn the Extra Recess is Thursday, 3/2!
6th grade academic update
How are humans impacted by pride? This is a question our students answered this week in an informative essay based on the actions of people in several Greek myths including Prometheus, Odyssey, and Arachne. Students will begin a new module next Monday focusing on character development in the novel, Summer of the Mariposas.
6th grade scholars are continuing to learn about expressions and equations (ask them to explain the difference) and are using tables, exponents, and substitution to solve real world situations.
Sparta and Athens are at the forefront of our social studies unit as we dive into those ancient cultures. We will further this unit by exploring the great philosophers of the time.
ATHLETIC UPDATE:
MS boys’ and girls’ soccer will begin the Monday before spring break, and their first games are Saturday, March 25.
MS boys’ and girls’ track & field will begin the Monday after spring break.
