LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 4-21-23
Hello LCIS Families,
We have completed the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) testing for 2023! We have a few students that will need to complete some missed test sessions, but the majority of our students have conquered this assessment showing Perseverance, Craftsmanship and Responsibility. We are very proud of the efforts and success of our students.
Go Panthers!
Mark your calendars because LCIS will be hosting our Celebration of Learning on Tuesday, June 6th from 6-7:15! We now plan to offer our spring concert in conjunction with this event, so will have music presentations from our band students and each grade level. This will be in place of the previously scheduled Spring Concert at LCHS on May 31st.
Join us on Wednesday, April 26 at 8:05 in the LCIS Gym for our April Community Meeting. It will be hosted by our 3rd graders and we will honor students for the habit of perseverance.

Visit beautiful high alpine lakes, learn how to cook on a camp stove, sleep under the stars, make great new friends, and challenge yourself! The trip is free for all participants and will be run by the High Mountain Institute in partnership with Full Circle of Lake County. No experience is necessary.
Enrollment Paperwork can be viewed here. Please return your application to Full Circle of Lake County (719-486-2400), or to Madeline Short from the High Mountain Institute (719-486-8200 x107; mshort@hminnnet.org; 531 CR 5A, Leadville, CO 80461). Should School Board members be paid? We want to hear from you. ¿Se debe pagar a los miembros de la Junta Escolar? Queremos escuchar de ti. |
The State of Colorado passed a new law (HB21-1055) that allows for a district to consider paying future School Board Members. The Lake County School Board sees the benefit in allowing pay for board members to recruit and attract community members who may otherwise have financial barriers to serving on the Board. We would like to hear your thoughts on the idea of compensating school board members. Please provide your input by May 15. You are also invited to share your input during public participation at upcoming school board meetings. These meetings are held the second and fourth Monday of the month at 6:30PM at the District Administration Office (315 W. 5th Street). We appreciate your input. |

ACADEMIC UPDATE:
Third graders began a new ELA unit studying Native Americans with an exploration of the various regions of North America and the homes, activities, and foods enjoyed by the tribes who live and have lived there. We sampled berries and squash, made adobe bricks, played lacrosse, and pretended to kayak! Ask your scholars what they learned about the regions where the first Native Americans settled and how geography impacts culture! We are now wrapping up our data module in math and have our end of module assessment on Tuesday, 4/25. Students have their next spelling test on Monday 4/24, please look over the take-home letter and spelling words 😊
Fifth grade is finishing up Shakespear on Monday in ELA and will begin our unit on Native Americans on Tuesday. 5th graders will present their version of Puck’s speech on Monday! Please ensure your child practices this speech that was sent in their homework packet LAST WEEK and THIS WEEK! They will receive a grade for this. We will begin learning abo
ut the characteristics of polygons in math next week!
Also of note for our 5th graders: The water fountains are currently out of order. Please encourage your child to bring a water bottle to school every day and they can fill it in another hallway.
ATHLETIC UPDATE:
Due to anticipated snow this weekend, tomorrow’s MS soccer games will be played at Gypsum Creek MS instead of Berry Creek MS. Game times will remain the same. Please check with your coach on modified departure times.
Upcoming home athletic events:
HS girls’ soccer- Saturday, April 29, at 9:00 am @ Community Park Field
HS girls’ soccer- Monday, May 1, at 4:00 pm @ Community Park Field
Despite cold and windy weather, our spring sports/activities are doing well. We currently have almost 20 HS track & field athletes in position to qualify for the state meet, which will be held in Denver on May 18-20. HS girls’ soccer traveled to Pinnacle last Saturday. Despite having only 9 players, they fought hard and lost a close game 4-3. Our cast for The Sound of Music is working diligently and will have a terrific show for our community May 11-13. You can get your tickets now at https://lakecountyhs.booktix.com. Both MS soccer teams have a win and a tie in their 3 games this season.
The team communication group is the best way to get updates on your students’ practices and games. If you are not receiving messages from your child’s coach, please contact them.
