LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out – 7/28/23
Hello LCIS Panthers!
🏫Welcome to the start of the 2023-2024 school year! We are looking forward to seeing our students in just over a week. It was a quick, but lovely summer filled with so many sunny days and the mountains filling in the backdrop. We hope that you were able to enjoy some time with your family and friends during these past two months and that your child is feeling ready to get back into the classroom.
While much of our day to day at LCIS will look similar to last year, we also have some exciting changes coming. This year, students in grades 3-5 will continue their English Language Arts (ELA) programming with the Amplify CKLA resources and students in 6th grade will use Amplify. We will also continue to focus on targeted reading instruction as all of our students will have a daily reading group to learn skills at their level. We will have dedicated time for students to develop their writing skills and offer social studies and science units throughout the year. All students will continue with the Engage NY Mathematics curriculum this year and still have access to practicing their math skills on IXL.
Some of our exciting changes are taking place in our specials/explore blocks. New this year is the use of Project Lead the Way in STEM. Our rising 3rd graders will be familiar with these materials as they used them at LCES in second grade. Austin Corley, our new music teacher, will continue to offer music programming to all of our students. Also new this year is a language class, in place of the health class, as an explore class. Students will either take English development or Spanish development. José Javier Guerrero Maldanado is our new Spanish teacher.
Other new staff members include Mallane Dressel, our new 3rd grade teacher who comes to us from LCES. Our new 4th grade teacher is a returning LCIS staff member, Emily Ward. In 5th grade we welcome Julia Schock to the team who joins us after teaching for a couple of years in Summit County. Sam Huston joins us full time as our Multilingual Paraprofessional after working as a substitute teacher last year. In our special education department we welcome Searia Aranda as our new paraprofessional. Renia Flemming joins us full-time this year as our health paraprofessional and will support students with health needs.
Sadly we have had to say goodbye to some fantastic educators and are still looking to fill some of their positions including the Assistant Principal, Behavioral Paraprofessional, English Language Development Teacher, and 6th grade teacher. Fortunately, we have some great folks who’ve worked with us before stepping in as long-term substitute teachers for some of these positions. And as always, we’ve got an “all hands on deck” approach to offer support to one another throughout the building. If you, or someone you know, may be interested in exploring a position and joining our amazing LCIS crew, please check out the employment opportunities on our district website and reach out!
Remember that orientation conferences are on Monday, August 7th from 10-6pm. Be sure to allow extra time for completing paperwork, paying for student fees, and getting your child’s photo taken. Conferences will be held on one day only this year and time slots are limited to 15 minutes a piece. Be sure to be prompt for your appointment and if you need to reschedule, call the office for assistance at 719-486-6830. If you still need to sign up, please do so here.
Also, your child needs to be registered in order to attend school beginning on Tuesday, August 8th. You should have received a registration packet in the mail earlier this month that contains information on registering your child. If you didn’t receive a packet or need assistance registering your child, please call the LCIS main office at 719-486-6830 or join us on Tuesday, August 1st from 4-7 at LCIS for registration night.
