LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 2-6-26
Hello LCIS Families,
As we move confidently into the flow of our third quarter, I’m excited to share how well things are going across our school community.
Classroom routines are solid, and that strong foundation is allowing students to fully engage in their learning. We’re seeing lots of meaningful growth as students push themselves into more challenging work, take academic risks, and build persistence. Their effort and focus have been truly impressive.
We are very proud of our students – not just for what they are learning, but for the dedication and determination they are showing each day. Thank you for your continued partnership and support at home, which plays such an important role in this success.
We look forward to all the learning and growth still ahead this quarter.
Celebrations:
Did you know it’s Love the Bus Month?!
Shout out to our fabulous bus drivers!
Upcoming:
LCIS Annual Scripps Spelling Bee:
On Tuesday, February 10th, LCIS will host its annual Scripps Spelling Bee. Students took home practice words over the winter break. Hopefully you’ve seen your child practicing their spelling words! Another way your child can practice is through the Word Club Spelling and Vocabulary app. Check it out! We will hold classroom competitions later this month to determine our finalists who will participate in our school-wide Bee.
Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day will fall on a Saturday this year. As such, we will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Thursday, February 12. During crew in the morning, students will have the opportunity to create a Valentine’s Day card collector. Each child will receive a small paper bag to decorate. Later in the day, classes will hold celebrations where they can exchange their Valentine cards with one another.
If you would like to send Valentine cards, please have your child write their own name in the “from” part, and leave the “to” name blank. For confidentiality reasons, we are not able to send out a class list. The number of students in your child’s class was sent via email and paper copy this week.
As a reminder, LCIS maintains food-free celebrations. We realize there are cards that have candy attached and these will be placed in the students’ bags. We will encourage the consumption of any candy at home. There is no expectation that students bring Valentine cards – it is an option for your family. We will have a nice time appreciating one another’s friendship regardless.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher. Thank you for your partnership! Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
5th Grade heads to the Herald Democrat on Thursday, 2/12
The 5th grade’s third annual field trip to the printing press at the Herald Democrat will be the morning of Thursday, 2/12. Students will enjoy the opportunity to explore a hidden treasure in the basement of a historic Harrison Avenue building. It gives our students real-world experience with a printing press, and the opportunity to make a connection to the local paper and the Panther of the Week program.
100th Day of School
Get ready to step back in time! Students are invited to dress like they are 100 years old to celebrate the 100th day of school on February 23rd. Ideas to help you dress the part: Gray or white wig, cardigans/sweater vests, suspenders, shawls, bowties and pearls.
Be creative! Have Fun! Celebrate 100 days of learning at school!
In Academic News:
From 4th Grade:
We just finished a math unit focusing on complex addition and subtraction, and measurement. Unit tests will be sent home next week for families to review. Currently, students are starting their geometry unit. They will focus on shapes, angles, and area.
In ELA, we are working through a unit on Contemporary Fiction. Students are reading and analyzing parts of the book The House on Mango Street as well as writing their own short stories about the hopes they have for the future.
From 5th Grade:
In ELA, students have started their Reformation unit. The Reformation is a time of reform, or change, as the name implies, and follows the Renaissance, which is the unit they just finished learning about. Students are learning the power of communication through the printing press as well as planning and drafting a friendly letter.
In math, we recently wrapped up our multiplication unit. In this unit, students learned to multiply using the standard algorithm. They also learned how to estimate for reasonableness and model division in many ways. Their next math unit will be learning to multiply and divide fractions.
IXL Homework:

Please continue to encourage your child to do about 20 minutes of IXL each day as homework. Encourage them to complete each recommended skill to mastery!
