Lake County Intermediate School Friday Afternoon Shout Out
Hello LCIS Families!
We had a great first week back at school. We’re all excited to be back together again and the students are doing a wonderful job of learning our systems and persevering through their assignments, as we have leaned into our academics. Way to go everyone!
Homework begins this week. Please check your child’s backpack for their purple folder. This will hold their homework and any notices that have been sent home. Students should plan to return their homework to their classroom teacher by Wednesday at the latest next week. We hope that having the homework packet over the weekend will allow your child to build the habit of doing a little work each day. Remember that your child also has access to IXL through their Chromebook and can log in to work on their math skills.
Please help your child remember to bring the following items to school each day- Chromebook, water bottle, and jacket/hoodie. We will be doing placement testing next week, so it is important for your child to have their Chromebooks at school every day charged and ready to go!
We already have a couple of items in the lost and found bin. If your child mentions that they can’t find something, encourage them to check the lost and found bin. Also, please help your child to stay connected to their items by labeling their belongings, including water bottles, jackets, and hoodies.
If you’re paying for your child to eat school lunch, please ensure that their account has enough funds to cover the lunches. You can pay for lunch by using our online system, e-Funds for Schools.
If your child brings cash or a check to pay for their lunches, they should bring their money to the cafeteria first thing in the morning.
Mr. Burns’s crew will be attending the Colorado Outward Bound School (COBS) on Wednesday and Thursday, August 24-25. This is a two day, one night event where students will engage in team building and leadership skills. Be sure to ask your 6th grader about the packing list. COBS is able to provide many of the camping items. The other 6th grade crews are scheduled to attend COBS on the following dates: FORGET: 8/31-9/1, CAMPBELL: 9/8-9/9
Our 5th grade students will go to Turquoise Lake on Thursday, August 25th, for their Cornerstone trip. The students will spend the day outdoors enjoying teambuilding activities and the beautiful area we live in. They will leave LCIS at 9 am and return at 2:45 pm.
We are already looking forward to our next community event! On September 27th, we will host our annual LCIS Open House and Forest Gallery Walk. NOTE! This date is a change from Sept. 20th. This event will take place beginning at 5:00 on the playground with welcome and send off into the forest to view student artwork. Following the Forest Gallery Walk, you and your child are invited to visit classrooms and chat with teachers. We’re excited to see you all there!
After School Programs will begin on September 6th. Please look in your child’s Thursday Folder this coming week for your child’s Project Dream confirmation letters. There are openings for Beginner Piano lessons with Celesta Cairns! Contact Blanca Rodriguez (brodriguez@lakecountyschools.net ) – our LCIS Project Dream Site Supervisor- for more information.
LCSD is hosting a Family Event where we will be discussing safety planning and preparedness for all of the schools in our district. We are partnering with the Leadville Police Department to review school district and law enforcement responses in the case of safety concerns in our schools. Examples of what we will discuss are natural disasters, school intruders, and active shooters. Join us on Tuesday, August 23rd at 6:00pm at LCES for this event. Interpretation and childcare will be provided. Please see the flier below for more information.

ACADEMIC UPDATE:
6th grade is ready to jump into our learning this year! We started our Ratios Math Module this week. Also, we are getting used to our new ELA curriculum, Amplify, that is almost completely computer-based. Our first ELA unit is titled “Dahl and Narratives” where we will read excerpts from Roald Dahl’s book, Boy, and write about small moments in time. 6th graders will be studying World Deserts in Social Studies. Lastly, 6th grade students and teachers are looking forward to and preparing for our overnight trips to COBS that will happen over the course of the next several weeks.
Please check below for the LCIS Breakfast and lunch menus. We will be sending them every week as part of our parent email. If you would like a paper copy of the menu, please call the LCIS office at 719-486-6830 and we can send one home with your child. Thanks for understanding our efforts to be environmentally and fiscally responsible!
