Lake County Intermediate School Friday Afternoon Shout Out
Hello LCIS Families!
We had a great week of learning at LCIS both indoors and outdoors. We are grateful to live in such a beautiful place and are excited that we are able to enjoy the beautiful weather while continuing our educational journey. Students in all grade levels either have already or are looking forward to teambuilding and being outside in nature. Thank you for sharing your children with us!
Beginning August 29, 2022 you will start to receive your LCIS text messages from a new phone number. You may want to add this phone number to your address book to help you easily recognize incoming texts from the school. The new phone number you will receive texts from our school is: 719-427-6120
Important Attendance Information: We are off to a strong start with attendance! Our daily average so far is 95%. Thank-you for prioritizing getting your child to school every day. We also wanted to update you regarding our attendance procedures. If your student needs to miss school, be sure to call the front office the day of their absence to excuse your child. Additionally, if your child needs to be out for an extended time (more than 2 days), you will need to complete a “request for prearranged absence” form. You can get this form from our front office. If this form is not completed ahead of time, the absences will be unexcused.
Crew classes played a trivia game to review HOWL (Habits of Work and Learning) during our Community Meeting this week. Students were introduced to the HOWL points system and learned how to earn points for prizes.
Mr. Burns’s crew was able to attend Colorado Outward Bound School (COBS) here in Leadville for an overnight team building adventure. Thanks to our partnership with Get Outdoors Leadville! (GOL!), all of our LCIS students will be able to participate in team building this fall.
Ms. Forget’s crew will attend COBS this week on Wednesday and Thursday, 8/31-9/1. Be sure to review the packing list with your student to ensure that they will have a happy, comfortable time out there! Ms. Campbell’s crew will attend 9/8-9/9
GOL! partnered with LCIS to help our 5th grade students learn some team building skills and enjoy our beautiful surroundings. The 4th graders will go on September 1st and the 3rd grade will go to Turquoise Lake on September 8th.
Beginning Piano class is being offered after school on Mondays. This is a special class supported by Bravo!Vail as an education outreach for students by the summer series that features symphony orchestra performances from the Untied States. Students receive specialized music instruction, books and families have access to concerts and seminars through the program. There are only 6 more spots available! Email Mrs. Cairns if you are interested ccairns@lakecountyschools.net or register here: https://www.hisawyer.com/bravo-vail-education/schedules?location_id%5B%5D=3214&schedule_id= Full or partial scholarships are available.
Please join us for our outdoor art show to see the art that students have created! The LCIS Outdoor Art Show and Open House will take place on September 27th beginning at 5:00 pm on the LCIS playground with some music and hot chocolate. Families will then take a walk into the forest to view student artwork. Following the Forest Gallery Walk, you and your child are invited to visit classrooms and chat with teachers. We’re excited to see you all there!
2022-2023 School Meals and Free and Reduced School Meal Applications
This school year students will be charged for their school meals based on their eligibility status for free and reduced school meals. All students will receive breakfast for free and students who are eligible for free meals or reduced-priced meals will also receive lunch for free. If your student was eligible for free or reduced meals during the 2021-2022 school year, that eligibility only carries through the first 30 days of school. Each year families must complete a new Free and Reduced School Meals application. Free and reduced school meal applications are available at your student’s school office and the LCSD District Office at 328 W. 5th, St., Leadville, CO 80461, or at www.lakecountyschools.net, under the Nutrition tab. If you have any questions please reach out to Leslee Torsell, Cloud City High School, 315 W. 6th St., Leadville, CO 80461, ltorsell@lakecountyschools.net, 719-486-6980.
This year meals cost:
If you’re paying for your child to eat school lunch, please ensure that their account has enough funds to cover the lunches. You can pay for lunch by using our online system, e-Funds for Schools. If your child brings cash or a check to pay for their lunches, they should bring their money to the cafeteria first thing in the morning.
After School Programs will begin on September 6th. Please look in your child’s Thursday Folder this week for your child’s Project Dream confirmation letters. ACADEMIC UPDATE:
4th Grade: Our students are off to a great start this school year. In ELA, students are working on writing personal narratives. Topics of focus include adding sensory details, dialogue, strong event sequence, and forming cohesive paragraphs. In math, 4th graders are building an excellent foundation in place value understanding. Next week they’ll be reviewing how to estimate and round numbers. Students have also been learning all about maps and coordinate locations in social studies. We are looking forward to our day at Turquoise Lake next Thursday!
5th Grade: We had a wonderful time with our Crews at Turquoise Lake yesterday! Thank you for helping your child be prepared. ELA: Students will continue reading and writing personal narratives next week. Our new topic is: OUR NAMES! Your child will be writing about their own name next week, so PLEASE sit with your child and talk about their name over the weekend. There is a sheet in their homework packet! Math: 5th grade begins the year continuing work with place value with numbers from millions to thousandths. We are learning about exponents, rounding to all place values (millions through thousandths), and comparing number values. Mid-module assessment coming up on September 6!
