LCIS Friday Afternoon Shout Out 4-26-24
Dear LCIS Families:
Thank you so much for coming to this month’s Community Meeting! Our third graders shared their learning from the ELA unit, Astronomy: Our Solar System and Beyond. The sun and all of the planets were well represented and their characteristics were fully explained using some very sweet humor. Great job 3rd graders!
We have officially completed our CMAS testing for the 2023-2024 school year! The students showed amazing perseverance by trying their best during these assessments and we were excited to reward them for their efforts! Students earned Perseverance Tickets for taking their time to carefully respond to each question and for moving forward even when the test seemed difficult. We kept the tickets after each daily drawing, and chose some bonus prize winners during our Community Meeting on Wednesday. Go Panthers!

Hiring committee Elementary principal stakeholder feedback sessions
Are you interested in participating in the Lake County Elementary School principal hiring process? We are looking for stakeholders of staff, parents and community members to engage in this process. We anticipate running a process similar to that of the high school principal, in which candidates will rotate through interviews with different stakeholder groups and provide feedback. If you would like to be involved, we would appreciate that you use this form to sign up. We anticipate the stakeholder interview sessions to be held the week of May 13-17. We intend to follow this event up with a staff and community meet and greet of finalists that would be open to the public the week of May 20th.
Backstage interviews for “Shrek the Musical” will be from 3:45-4:30 on Wednesday, May 1 in the HS auditorium. Please note that priority will be given to 7th-12th grade students. No preparation needed. Acceptance or rejection emails will be sent on May 2nd. Please email Mrs. Cairns at ccairns@lakecountyschools.net with questions.
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
The 6-8 Math Curriculum Audit Team shared their recommendation for Reveal Math to be adopted at the middle school level, grades 6-8. After close review, the team believes that Reveal Math will provide fluency work and scaffolded materials, differentiated work from the remedial to advanced, and real-life problem-solving opportunities, making in a potential good match for all our students. The materials are available in both English and Spanish, and they connect directly to MAP data from NWEA allowing students to use their math results for targeted skills practice recommendations. Please check out Reveal Math and let us know what you think by completing a quick survey.
In 5th grade, we just completed a mid-module assessment in math on finding volume. Next, we will work on finding the area and volume of figures with fractions as part of their side length.
We started our Native American Unit last week. We will begin writing our persuasive essays soon describing why the image we chose best represents the tribe’s connection to nature. We are working toward 1000 minutes on IXL from April 1-mid-May, so please encourage your child to keep working “in the arena” on their skill plan on IXL!
PROJECT DREAM UPDATE:
On 4/26/24, we will have a practice Lockdown Drill at Lake County Intermediate School for the students attending Project Dream. We practice this drill so that we may familiarize the staff and students with our expectations and routines in case we are ever faced with a crisis.
In a Lockdown, students and teachers are trained to follow “Locks, Lights, Out of Sight”. Students move away from doors and windows and maintain silence. Teachers lock the classroom doors, turn out the lights, account for students and wait for the First Responders to open the door. We practice this Standard Response Protocol to ensure safety in our school should an emergency arise.
Please take this opportunity to talk with your child about safety at school and at home. Please contact Taylor Trelka at 719-427-7003 if you have any questions about our Standard Response Protocol or lockdown practice.
Rockies Rock is coming soon! We hope you are doing well! We wanted to share that enrollment has opened for Rockies Rock Adventure Camp this summer! Families can enroll here. We will begin confirming enrollments on May 1st.
We hope to share this information with previous camp families, and also invite new folks to join. Please feel free to share this message across the community 🙂
If you have any questions, or need assistance, myself and our Outreach & Enrollment Coordinator are happy to help! We also have updated information and FAQs on our website in English and Spanish.
