LCES Families, What a fun night we had last night! Thank you for the amazing turn out to our Family Fun Night Trick or Treat Festival. We hope your child enjoyed getting in costume and saying “trick or treat” for fun toys and trinkets! Halloween is next Thursday. Students are welcome to dress in their costume for the day as long as it is school appropriate, meaning no weapons, face masks, or face paint. What have we been learning at LCES? Here’s a quick snapshot of some of the things you can bring up when asking your student each night “How was your day?” In PK, students are learning about families and communities. Their dramatic play center includes role playing materials for birthday parties, making lists, completing chores and routines, etc. Students are also learning the following nursery rhymes: “Rain, Rain, Go Away”, “Five Little Monkeys”, “Pease Porridge”, “Teddy Bear”, “A Tisket, A Tasket”. Kindergarteners are working on learning familiar stories like “The Three Little Pigs”, “Chicken Little”, and the “Bremen Town Musicians”. In math, students are exploring different ways to make 5. In first grade, students are wrapping up their knowledge unit on “Different Lands, Similar Stories” and will soon begin learning about “Early World Civilizations. For math, students will soon begin learning the relationship between addition and subtraction as well as the meaning of the equal sign (a relationship between two quantities). Second graders are learning about “Ancient Greek Civilizations” as well as using a writing checklist to write narratives retelling a story. In math, students are counting and modeling two and three digit numbers with place value (hundreds, tens, ones). We hope you enjoy your weekend! Hello Center Families, Hope you had fun trick or treating with us last night! Thursday is Halloween. Please see information in the letter that was sent home for details. Students can wear their costumes to school to help celebrate. It is good to also send extra clothes. Sometimes costumes get hot or bothersome and it can be nice to have something to change into. Looking forward to another nice weekend! See you Monday! Tanya Lenhard – PreK Director Office phone: 719-486-6928 Cell: 719-293-1055 tdlenhard@lakecountyschools.net Classroom and Curriculum Updates: Home to School Connection: CKLA home to school connection tip: We are wrapping up learning about family traditions and celebrations, community helpers, and our community. We are also talking about what words and letters are, rhyming and learning to blend compound words like “sun – shine.” You can support your child’s learning by reading to your child each day. As you read each book, talk about the words on the page and the direction you read (left to right and top to bottom). Use your finger to track the words as you are reading them).Room 130: Next week room 130 will continue their study of Trees. They will be reading “The Grouchy Ladybug” by Eric Carle. Enjoy an animated reading of this book here. The Grouchy Ladybug Kelly Horning Assistant Director Office Phone: 719-486-6927 khorning@lakecountyschools.net Family Engagement Corner: WOW – it is hard to believe the month of November starts next week! For me, thoughts of November and Thanksgiving are a great reminder to be actively thankful for things in my life. But how do you explain and cultivate a spirit of thankfulness and gratitude in children – especially in Toddlers and Preschoolers? Please see the following article for information and helps on how to do just that!Fostering Gratitude in Toddlers and PreschoolersGratitude is a high-level concept that can be tricky for toddlers and preschoolers. In their early years, children are naturally self-focused as part of their development. However, as they grow, fostering a sense of gratitude helps them become more understanding of the needs and feelings of others. When Do Children Learn About Gratitude?Children begin learning about gratitude as early as age 2. At this stage, they may start expressing thanks when prompted. By ages 3 to 5, children can understand the concept of gratitude more deeply and show appreciation independently.Tips for Teaching Gratitude:It’s simple to build-in daily activities to help your child understand the needs and feelings of others. Below are five tips to get you started.Teach Them to Say Thank You Encourage your child to thank people who help them. This can be a server at a restaurant, a sibling who helps them pick up toys or a friend who gives them a birthday gift.Express Your Gratitude Let your children know why you are grateful for them. Be specific to make them feel special and loved. For example, say, “I appreciate how you help your brother pick up his toys.”Model Gratitude Share what you are grateful for with your children. This can be through a blessing before dinner or a family gratitude journal where everyone writes down what they are thankful for.Support Charitable Activities Get involved in charitable events or organizations. Whether donating clothes or toys, participating in a food drive or baking cookies for a new neighbor. Explain to your children what these actions mean to those who receive them.Be Consistent Like all skills, gratitude is not learned in one lesson. Regularly practice and reinforce the habit of being thankful.www.firstthingsfirst.org/first-things/teaching-young-kids-about-gratitude/Please use the above link to access this article. You will also find more information on how to cultivate a spirit of gratitude in your child. I have several friends who post daily on Social Media, one thing they are thankful for during the month of November. At the end of the month, they have a record of appreciation for that time period in their lives. Why not try something like that with your family during the month of November? It would not have to be a daily thing and you would not have to post it on Social Media – just plan a simple way to discuss “thankfulness” with your family, encouraging each family member to contribute to the discussion. To further encourage thankfulness, you could select a few things from your list and find tangible ways to say “thank you.” For example, your family could write notes and/or color pictures expressing your appreciation and deliver them to the local Fire Station (perhaps along with some homemade cookies – everybody loves cookies)! So, even with your family’s crazy daily schedule (and even as things get more hectic as we move towards December and all that entails), try and be diligent in helping your child develop a spirit of thankfulness and gratitude helping them to become aware of all of the “good things” in their lives. Our world needs more people like that! Rhonda H. DeVoe Preschool Family and Community Engagement Manager Office Phone: (719) 486-6925 Cell Phone: (719) 293-1403 rdevoe@lakecountyschools.net | |

The Lake County School District has an excess of artificial turf rolls obtained during the re-turf of the Community Field. They are currently stored in the upper parking lot of the Lake County Intermediate School on 6th street. They are free to anyone who would like to take them. Each roll weighs about 1,200 pounds, and are on a first come, first serve basis. |
