Update on Federal funding for LCSD
Dear LCSD Families:
I hope that this finds you all having a great summer! Given recent news coverage, I wanted to reach out regarding uncertainty about some of our district’s federal funding.
By now, you have likely heard that the federal government is currently withholding some funds for K-12 that were previously approved by Congress for the current budget year. Today, I participated in a roundtable with Governor Polis focused on the impacts of this funding freeze for schools.
Since we just learned about the funding freeze last week, we are in the midst of assessing exact next steps for LCSD. What we know for sure is that the lion’s share of funds for our district that are being withheld support our after-school program, Project Dream. These frozen 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant funds represent almost two thirds of Project Dream’s annual budget for next year.
We are working on securing a variety of funding sources to backfill the loss of these funds, and we are optimistic that we will find a way to offer after-school programming next year in some form, though it may not look exactly the same.
We know how important reliable after-school programming is to many families. Despite significant and sudden uncertainty, I can assure you that we are going to do everything in our power to maintain these programs. I am working hard to tell our story and help people understand the importance of continuing these amazing services for kids and families in Lake County!
See you soon,
Kate
