Dear LCSD Staff,
You may have heard the difficult news over the weekend that there was a shooting in our community early Saturday morning. You can read Sheriff Heath Speckman’s statement about the incident here.
We know that an incident such as this in our small town has many impacts and reverberations, and that there are community members who are hurting right now. We send our deepest condolences, and we will do everything in our power to support all parties impacted through this difficult time.
We will have two extra mental health professionals on site at the high school on Tuesday to provide support to students and staff as needed. If you have students or staff in different buildings who need support, please alert your principal. They can coordinate with the high school front office and leadership team to help direct assistance to where it’s needed in the district.
At this point, we are not providing formal talking points for Crew on Tuesday morning. However, if students ask you direct questions, please:
- Only reference what has happened as described in Sheriff Speckman’s statement and please only relay relevant facts. Please do not share any information that has not been released by law enforcement.
- Acknowledge that staff and students might expect a wide range of responses during this difficult time. Please seek additional support for anyone who might need it.
- Identify students or staff in need of assistance and alert your admin team.
Anyone who needs assistance outside of school hours is encouraged to contact the following mental health supports:
- This weekend: Anyone may contact Paragon (Vail Health) at 303-953-0117. You only need to say you are from Lake County and they will assist you.
- Anyone can access the Sol Vista crisis line by calling 719-486-0985.
- We are also attaching information for accessing the Employee Assistance Program.
If you or someone you love is hurting, please reach out to the resources above or one of us directly, and we can connect you with the right support.
Take care and we will see you on Tuesday,
Kate Bartlett, Superintendent 719-293-0104
