Information for Preschool Parents – April 2019

April 17, 2019

Dear Center Parents: (en español abajo)

We hope this finds you well. Our purpose in writing today is to summarize the events of the past few weeks and to let you know some of our next steps.

Over the past two weeks, we have offered several different opportunities for parents to ask questions and share needs with district administrators and Board of Education members related to the allegation regarding a preschool teacher. We want you to know that we are still here and available if you have ongoing questions or concerns. Please reach out first to Tanya Lenhard, Director of Early Childhood Programs, and she can put you in touch with the correct district administrator if needed. Tanya can be reached at tdlenhard@lakecountyschools.net or 719-486-6921.

We have also shared some resources and we are including those resources again below. If you need additional resources or ideas for mental health support, the best contact is Kerri Quinlan, our Director of Healthy Schools. Kerri can be reached at kquinlan@lakecountyschools.net or 719-486-6800.

In terms of what happens next, law enforcement’s investigation and the legal process are both ongoing. The district’s current role is to support the ongoing investigation. As a reminder, the employee will not be returning to our schools and is not permitted on school district property. We are also beginning the process of evaluating additions and changes that will continue to support excellent early childhood education at The Center. We plan to implement improvements on an ongoing basis and into the coming school year. We welcome your feedback.

Finally, as you are aware, Tanya Lenhard announced earlier this spring that she will be leaving her position and the district after over 15 years of service. We will miss her! We are beginning the process of hiring a new Director of Early Childhood Programs and have convened a hiring committee with parent representatives from Policy Council. We will update you as the hiring process continues.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your partnership,

Wendy Wyman, Superintendent

Resources for Families

In response to requests from families over the past week, we would like to share some additional resources that support prevention and response to child sexual abuse.

Darkness to Light: Education, training and resources to end Child Sexual Abuse (English only).

Early, Open, Often: Sexual abuse prevention, including how to have conversations with children about sexual abuse.

English: https://www.earlyopenoften.org/

Spanish: https://www.abiertoyamenudo.org/

National Child Traumatic Stress Network: Information and resources for childhood trauma (go to the “Resources” menu for information in Spanish).

https://www.nctsn.org/

One way you can help keep our schools safe is to encourage your student to please share any concerns they have about safety with an adult, preferably at school, but also at home. Parents and students may also always anonymously report a safety concern using Safe2Tell by visiting www.safe2tell.org or calling 877-542-SAFE (877-542-7233).

If there are other resources we can help provide, please also feel free to contact our Healthy Schools Director, Kerri Quinlan, at kquinlan@lakecountyschools.net or 719-486-6800.

Estimados padres de The Center:

https://www.nctsn.org/
